VirbEdit finding ghost gps files

A couple of weeks ago I did my first ever 100+ mile cycle ride.

With about 14 miles to go I paused then shut my Edge 800 off to save the battery before the final 14 miles.

When I turned it back on the 800 crashed and lost 88 miles

I have just been editing some random video in VirbEdit and had my edge 800 connected and it found some very old gps files dated 31/12/1989

Clicking on one of the old files it looks like my 103 mile ride got recorded some how using VirbEdit.

If I load the gps file to a video in VirbEdit it crashes and anytime I try to load in the same video file I tried to add gps file it crashed out completely.

Questions:

Where exactly are these old files stored on the edge 800 as I cant find it in the activity folder?

Will I be able to recover the lost data of my 103 mile cycle ride?

How can I stop virbEdit from crashing every time I try to import or load the clip I tried to import the dead/corrupted gps file

Sorry about the trouble and thanks for contacting us.

When it crashes, do you get an error message? How does it look like?

The ghost file would have to be a .fit or .gpx file on your Edge. If you can identify which file it is, it would be theoretically possible to recover the data, but it's hard to say. Sounds like it's corrupted in some way.

This might work to get the file:

    1. Launch VIRB Edit. Right-click on the clip that crashes when you try to play it.
    2. Click 'Properties'.
    3. Go to the 'GPS Info' tab.
    4. Hit 'export' on the GPS log.

If this doesn't work (you get the same crash), then you have to locate the file by hand. All the clips' GPS logs can be found in sub-directories of C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit\Database\2\RawMovies. The file you are looking for is called track.gpx and might be fairly large if it's for a 100 mile ride. The thumbnail file thumbnail.jpg located in the same folder might help you locate the right clip. If you find the track.gpx file that is of interest / the culprit if the crash, move it somewhere else so we can try to recover the data. Make sure it's deleted from C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit\Database\2\RawMovies. That should prevent the crash.

Sorry for the late reply but I was trying forever to look for the .gp or .fit file. I think I truly have a ghost in the machine cause I can't find it anywhere & I can't see what I saw again either. Very weird. Anyways no biggie I'll just have to do another 100 miler and make sure I don't switch off but keep charging when needed to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Keep up the good work and updates :thumbsup
