Where does VIRB Edit get GPS data from VIRB Elite files?

It appears that the VIRB Edit "Clip Library" must point to the MP4 files that are downloaded from the VIRB Elite camera, however, the file names are not displayed in the library. Only the file dates and times are displayed. Is the GPS data embedded in these files? When I create a video VIRB edit creates two new files, an MP4 file and a GPX file with a name that I provide. Am I correct to believe that the new MP4 file does not contain embedded GPS data? Is the data in the new GPX file identical to the embedded GPS data in the original MP4 file? I am asking this because I have some videos I created where the GPX duration obtained by subtracting the end time from the start time shown in the file does not match the GPS duration shown within VIRB Edit when the "GPS Sync..." feature is used. In one case the GPS Sync feature shows a duration of 4:23 whereas the GPX file data results in a computed duration of 4:17. The GPS data is not properly synced to the video for these files and I cannot correct this using the GPS Sync feature. I have other files where the GPS data is properly synced and for those the duration of the GPS data displayed in the GPS Sync feature matches the computed duration obtained from the associated GPX file.
  • GPS data is kept separately. It's not in the .mp4's, ever. The GPS files are kept in a separate directory on your computer. For the Mac OS X version, they're somewhere in ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/VIRB Edit, and Windows has a similar place. If you look on your VIRB when it's plugged in (there'll be a disk NO_NAME mounted) you can see that the VIRB creates both .fit and .gpx files, but I have no idea why.

Does anyone know if Virb Edit uses the .gpx or .fit to create overlays, if it's the .fit it looks like I could correct elevation problems pretty easily with Fitfile repair tool.

The Fit File Repair Tool can open and edit GPX files same as Fit files. :)

I have not been able to find the GPS log files on my Win 8 system. I can find the *.gpx files on the VIRB Elite camera but once I've imported the files onto my computer the *.gpx files don't show up in the file system, only the *.mp4 files are visible. When I'm in VIRB Edit and choose "Replace" under the GPS Log menu it shows the GPS log files as being in the Clip Library with date/time names such as "2014-10-26 14:32:13". However, I can't find these files. If I create a video and export it, a gpx file with the name of the video is created and I can see that file in the Clip Library. However, these files are not used by VIRB Edit unless I use the "Replace" option under the GPS Log menu to make it use them. I would like to know where the GPS log data files that VIRB Edit is using, prior to "Replace", are stored.

VIRB Edit uses both FIT and GPX. FIT has more accurate data for some values, like speed e.g.

The FIT file gets written for the full power cycle of the VIRB, the GPX files are written for each video taken.

To get the GPX and FIT file for a clip in VIRB Edit:

    1. Right-click on a clip in the clip library.
    2. Click 'Properties'.
    3. Change to the GPX Info tab.
    4. Now you can export the GPX and FIT file (if available).

Thanks FALAGAR, if I was to export the FIT file and correct the elevation data (using Fit File Repair Tool) can I re-import the file or do I just use the Add GPS function?

Falagar, this was helpful. However, I'm still wondering where VIRB Edit gets the data for the gpx file that it Exports. What I mean is that only an mp4 file is visible in the Clip Library, as saved on the hard drive during import from the camera, until either a video is exported or as you described the GPS info is exported via the video clip Properties tab. It appears to me that the GPS data must be embedded in the mp4 file.

The imported GPX and FIT files are in VIRB-Edit's database, not in the .MP4 files.
You can look in this hidden directory: C:\Users\{USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit\Database\2
The FIT's are in FIT, the GPX's are in the sub-directories of RawMovies.
BEWARE that removing, moving or changing of files may cause damage to the database that cannot be restored.

Thanks PA3FBO, that's what I wanted to know. I'll heed your warning not to mess with these files. What information is contained in the FIT files and how do they differ from the GPX files?
