File naming and sequence

Hello,
Is there any setting on the Virb Elite or Virb Edit that allows one to set the last sequence # to be used when importing files?
Everytime I erase the SD Card, the Virb Elite starts from sequence #1 so now I end up with files having the same name as seen in the pic attached.

Thanks

Leave or place a picture or video with the number you want on the SD, (virb0067.jpg or virb0067.mp4), and the VIRB will start with the next number (virb0068).
Other camera's remember the last number in their memory, the VIRB's don't :(.
Furthermore if the number reaches virb0999, instead of going to virb1000, it makes a new folder and starts with virb0001 again.
So instead of 9999 files in a directory, you only get 999.
When the VIRB is set to automatic picture taking with an interval of 2 seconds, in the end of the day you'll get a lot of directories and a lot of double numbers:mad:.
  • Ahhhhh.

Thank you very much. That makes perfect sense. I'll give it a shot.

    ?????

For me, it doesn't make any sense at all to keep using VIRB0001,2,3,etc over and over again.

I sent in a Support Query and they didn't understand the question and didn't see any need to have unique file names. Obviously none of them have digital cameras.

The irony of the situation is that VIRB Edit will add a bracketted number to a duplicate filename when importing video clips to prevent overwriting the existing file. Why did they write this code into VIRB Edit instead of telling the Virb (camera) designers to number their files logically (i.e. no duplicates).

Because the Firmware guys live on an island shielded and far from the real world (as with other Garmin Hardware).
Try to find the official VIRB (Elite), hardware, forum.... there isn't one.

They even implement features in the camera without notifying the software (VIRB Edit) guys!
  • Would be nice if they named the video files the same way they name the GPX tracks on the camera - so instead of VIRB0001, VIRB0002,... you get Video_2014-09-30-122456.mp4 (like it's Track_2014-09-30-122456.gpx)

Even if they made that naming transformation possible during the import into VIRB Edit.

Naming them track-like would indeed be a much better way.
Maybe there are some conventions about naming video/pictures on camera's as all the camera's I know of use the old DOS 8.3 format.

Plus 1 for them redoing their naming convention! The date / time idea above, the same as the track files, is by FAR the best, I think! I cannot for the life of me imagine the logical thought-processes which culminated in the idea of 'Virb0xxx' being the absolute BEST way to name files. The mind boggles.....
  • 8.3 might be the answer. As far as I know, the underlying FAT file system still only allows 8.3 file names. Modern OS's maintain tables that translate associate the 8.3 file names to longer ones, which is what we all see. The real surprise is that the tracks are named the way they are instead of TRK0xxx. (Hmm, maybe they are named that way, and we only see the long version.)

I don't think 8.3 is the answer. Given that the extension will be the same for each clip, that leaves 8 places for the actual file-name - and at LEAST 6 of them will be taken just by the date (and that IF they shorten it to the convenient 'YYMMDD' format, which leaves all clips in chronological order). 6 Places for just the date - which leaves only TWO for the number of the file; maximum *100* clips per day limit.

I don't know about anyone else, but *I* expect better than that.

And while they're fixing this, they can arrange it so that all data files, video and photos are downloaded to their own folder named in the same fashion ('YYMMDD', according to the date). Solves a whole lot of other issues too.

I don't think he means that 8.3 is the solution, but the underlying problem.
