Add waypoints to tracklog display

The tracklog display is great for showing progress on a closed circuit race track, but on a motorcycle ride is a bit meaningless. This could be improved considerably if we could add a START and END waypoint, giving, say, the town names or the Trail name. This is very desireable when there's only a track displayed in the final video, however if Garmin find a way to display a "real" map, like in the Create Video mode, it would be less important.

Thanks

I believe a real map is still on their list.
There are legal issues in using Google or Bing maps.
Garmin does not own the maps they use in their GPS, and have no permisson (yet) to use them in video output.
They were also looking into Open Street Maps.
For now there are just two ways I know of, of getting a real map into your video.
    1) capture the preview with the map. (http://youtu.be/ECk9cGdNWtw)
    2) capture only the map and use another editer with PiP (picture in picture) to put the map in. (re-syncing the map probably neccesery)

When using method 1, Win7 has no problems with the 3.5GB limit. You'll probably loose some quality.

I'm quite impressed with the results in method 1). When he says "I just played it and did a screen capture at 1664x940p", this makes it sound easy, but I'm having trouble finding a program that will do this. If you are really into video and editing then you probably have good software (i.e. not "Free Download" type), so I'll need to put this on my to-do list if Garmin don't add the feature in the near future.

    Thanks for your input.

I'm using Direct Stream Recorder, I have it for many years now http://www.sytexis.com/ $29.95
First it was calles "Web Stream Recorder Pro". I initially bought that with a lifetime update.
From 2009, after an update it was called Direct Stream Recorder.
    Video how it's used: http://www.sytexis.com/dsrecorder_using.htm
Draw a rectangle around the part you want to record, set if you wat to capture mouse and clicks.
It can only record in a few formats.
When I want to use a caputre in VE I first need to convert it with Any Video Converter (free edition)
    http://www.any-video-converter.com/download-avc-free.php

I had some software from NCH but they dump all there software on your PC if you just want to try one program.
Than after the trial period you can't remove it without disturbing other software that was running ok before...Be warned.

Thank you for the very useful information.

Direct Stream Recorder didn't come up in my Google searches. I'll take a look at it.

Probably because it's old and not updated since 2009, still it works fine for me.
The screen captures of the video's in the How To section are all done with this program.
My monitor is 1080p, and I need some space to for the start/stop button on the screen.
(never felt the need to figure out how the hot key should work, but now playing with it, it seems to be the "Scroll Lock" :))
Thats why I recorded VIRB Edit in 720p, also giving me a border in PowerDirector to place some text in as the final video's are 1080p.

I tried Direct Stream Recorder and experimented with the few settings you could change but couldn't get acceptable quality in the AVI it generated. I'm not into video enough yet to know how to get better quality.

I noticed DSR's website hasn't been updated since 1999 so I e-mailed them to see if they still support it.

The real map and tracklog makes a huge difference for me, so I'll keep persevering and learning (and hope Garmin add the feature soon).

    Thanks again for your help.
