VIRB Edit 2.7.0 is available

We can buy a camera which main advantage is to record sensor & gps data with the video, but we can't ask for having a stable software to use these video & data? Or maybe we have to spend more money in an additional software?

I didn't bought a VIRB because of Virb Edit. Instead, I'm using Virb Edit because I bought a Virb Elite camera. Therefore, I expect, from Garmin, an international enterprise pretendig to be the leader in the global market, to give me a whole solution to record, edit and share my outdoor experiences.

I don't care if sales department was struggling with development department. I don't care if there was a Garmin guy who just a few days before the release had a brilliant idea and then they developed a basic software in one week (I expect that Garmin does'nt works in this way). I don't care if Virb Edit guys have limited resources (give them more resources).

What I want is to have the experience that Garmin explained in their advertisments when I bought my Garmin. Nothing else. Give us a stable solution. We are geting tired of new versions, new firmwares...

In the past I bought some other Garmin products (Car Navigator, Forerunner 305, Foreunner 310xt...), but there will be no more Garmin products for me in the near future. This is my way to push Garmin to solve these problems. I know that probably they don't care about one guy not buying their products, but if they don't correct the way they work, probably in the future there will be more people making the same decision.

Stop Updates, Keep Map Data

How can I block Virb Edit from tying to update itself, but keep getting map data? I added a firewall rule to block its internet access, but (of course) lost map data updates.

It looks like VE is still trying to update itself - it displays update messages while performing operations, and then crashes.


And Pa3fbo - I **PAID** for the Virb Elite specifically due to the claims advertised by Garmin that with it, I could create videos with overlaid data of speed, direction, etc. I have the RIGHT to expect their products AND software to work as advertised. Their failure to do so is NOT my problem. It's also NOT my responsibility. I have **PAID** for the right to complain when they don't work as advertised!

UPDATE: Virb Edit seems to work just fine without an internet connection (or at least, as well as it ever works....) Of course, I don't get a nice map on-screen - but the exporting process does not use this in any way. I still get what looks like an accurate track in my videos.

You can ask for stable software, but here it's stable, just some minor bugs.
It highly depends on what system you have.

Look at Microsoft, XP has been around for a very long time and until the end there were new updates and even newer bugs found.
It even was not their first operating system. Now with Win7, 8, 8.1 there are still new updates and patches.
Other professional programs like Acronis don't work on all systems specially with new hardware.
For Garmin it is their first outdoor camera and their first editing software, so they are far away from being a markt leader (I think GoPro still is).

As there are too many configurations to test before a release, they need usable feedback.
The alternative is making a list of approved hardware and software, like SolidWorks does, if it's not on the list, it's your own risk.

A list is usefull, only when you are going to buy a system dedicated to VIRB Edit, and who would do that.
Most of us have a system and are trying to run VIRB Edit on it.

You could begin a list (table) with hardware/software combinations and the problems they have.
I tried to start a list for known good/bad µSD cards, but got little response.

I realise that you do not work for Garmin; I also appreciate the fact that you really are trying to help people like myself here on these forums.

However, I do not accept the excuse of 'Microsoft releases buggy software - so Garmin can too!'. Neither is acceptable (which is what your comment seems to be implying). And further - this implies that software companies in general do not write software robust enough to cope with differing hardware - which can be explained by only 2 things:

• They are not clever enough to do this
  
• They are too lazy to do this
  

- neither of which is a good reason for accepting buggy software.

I cannot think of another technical / engineering industry where the release of a faulty product is deemed *acceptable* (it happens, of course - but where is it acceptable to do so?)
Only in software do we find this is the case. I can think of no good reason for this sole exception. If other industries have a work ethic and reputation for releasing products that work properly, why cannot the software industry?

Perhaps we consumers are in part responsible for this - almost from the beginning we have accepted buggy software by purchasing it and (even worse!) accepted the poor excuse of 'computers are too complicated!' when the software doesn't work as expected.

Well, this IS a poor excuse - and I do not, and will not, accept it. If computers are 'too complicated', then (some) programmers should find alternative careers.

Please understand - I'm not ranting at you or trying to fight you; I'm just explaining my position, and *why* this is my position. I appreciate all the help and advice you give here.

What the HECK?!? I have specifically *declined* the update each time it has been offered in Virb Edit - but, lo and behold - now I cannot export video, and the version given in 'About...' is 2.7!!!! WTF?!?

I was trying to export a video, and it kept getting stuck at 34.79%. I deleted the entire job and recreated the video from scratch - same result: 34.79%. Then I tried playing it - jerky as hell. So I checked to see what version was installed, and the damn software has updated itself WITHOUT my knowledge and most certainly without my permission!

Guys, time to get your act together!!! Damn amateurs!!

VIRB Edit does not update itself automatically. Unless you tell it to update it will not do so. So I am not sure how you got 2.7.

2.7 has an issue that export will fail if you try to export from the edit page. The safest thing would be to close VIRB Edit and export from the video gallery.

We are working on a maintenance release that will fix this and other issues.

Ya know, think I will reverse any negativity I may have expressed in an earlier post. I am a complete dumb ass when it comes to software design and really want this software to succeed because its got everything I need in one package. So, Garmin Software guys, do your best and get us a good product. I for one can wait for your final update, which I know will be spectacular. There, my glass is now half full....

For me, 2.7.0 works better than 2.6.2.
I managed to create a full project with the Asus Transformer T300LA, using the previous version it was impossible with that hardware...

Some little problems:
during editing, if I see full video, there are some jerkings, overall at the begin of a scene, during the play, (but the jerkings disapear during export)
Exporting crash after few seconds if I export video from editing area (button ob the right-top).
Exporting don't crash if I close Virb-edit, reopen and export directly with contextual menu on icon of the project.

I have some scenes extracted by two records: 1) going up on cable car in mountain, 2) going down on "monty express" (a sort of roller coaster in the mountain).
Between recording 1 and 2, I have switch off the camera (I had to wait in a queue..), so I have 2 different GPS Data files.

I used chart with elevation quota: well:

for the scenes taken from recording (1), the chart is a line that rises in altitude.
for the scenes taken from recording (2), the chart is a line that falls in altitude.

during the preview, I can see my position rises to maximum altitude and in the second phase, my position falls from top to bottom, all is ok.

when I export the video, phase 1 is ok, but when I start phase 2 (descent) the graph does not change and remains the same of the ascent, so I cannot view my position decrease of altitude, all other indicators are correct.
Why there are different behaviour between preview and export?
There are some workaround? (for the moment, I delete the chart...what a pitty! because I liked it!)
