Garmin Virb Elite: 32GB Micro SD card class 10. Up to date firmware.

I record my commute, it's 1.5 hours in the saddle but it resets every 30 mins approx. It's not set to loop or anything but it keeps splitting all my data... Help??

How do I stop videos & GPS data being split to 30 min sectors as it resets time and GPS on each section?

I noticed time will reset to zero on each clip and that's why I use date/time of day instead. Hadn't noticed GPS being re-set. I need to look to see if seconds are included with date/time of day because that would help when synching clips from 2cams when taking the exported files from virb edit all to a different editing program for titles, transitions, fades, pic in pic and etc. edit--you cannot stop it from being split..as far as I know that is an operating system limitation under Windows 7 and below...

Thanks Army, I might do that but it really restricts the video which was why I bought the Garmin Elite. But if it works for Windows 8 then I'll upgrade to that if you know that works?

I am sorry, but the camera can only handle files around 4GB long. So you get splits every 20 something minutes when recording in Full HD. The only way to record more time is to record at lower quality.
  • Wouldn't it just be easier for Garmin to dump the outdated legacy Fat32 and support exFat then the only limitation to amount of video you could record would be the size of the memory card. Works with Windoze and OSx etc.

I'm not holding my breath though!

virb supports exFat ... at least that's how my memory card is formatted and it works fine ... but I haven't been in a situation to have longer than a 30 minute single clip yet recorded so I don't know if that plays in or not.

In case of my 7 to 9 hour rides, I prefer 20 minute clips over one big 7 hour clip.
The camera might have a crash and I would lose all of the 7 hour clip or I would lose just the last 20 minutes.
It takes a bit more work to put the movie together but at least you still can do it.
My other camera makes 5 minute clips with the clips having a 10 frame overlap.... thats fun to edit:(
But that camera is more intended as a security cam.
  • Well, with exFat memory card and unrestricted settings, the largest file my virb made today was about 3.7 Gb in physical size and about 27 minutes long.

This was at 720p / 60hz recording settings.

I wonder if a lower bit rate would get a longer file ... i'll try that some time.
  • Yes, it will. For example, I've been recently using 720@30fps a lot, and there the clip size is about 53 minutes. It's the physical size of the file that matters, and it can't go over ~ 4 Gb. If you use time lapse, you can get even longer intervals in a single file.
