Power Save and Virb Remote

Virb Elite running the latest firmware as of this post.
I bought the virb remote thinking what a great idea.
I sync'd it to the camera and everything works flawlessly.

That is until powersave kicks in. The remote will trigger a picture while the camera is in power save, but it will NOT start the video recording.
I even tried taking a picture to wake it up and then hitting record, no dice. The camera wakes up long enough to take the picture and then goes right back to the power save screen.

Well that stinks. So I went into the camera settings and turned OFF power save. 5 minutes later the camera has entered power save and the remote no longer works.
WTF?

I bought the remote so I could trigger the video without having to touch the camera(mounted on the front fender of a motorcycle out of reach). What good is a remote control that won't activate the remote device without first pushing a button on said remote device?

Either the remote needs to be able to wake the camera up from sleep, or powersave needs to NOT activate when it is turned off.
  • If you have Setup/System/Power Save on, I suggest you turn it off. My three Elites still obey the Remotes even if they're in Sleep mode, which is what you get if you turn Power Save off.

Edit: Sorry, noticed after I posted that you do have Power Save off.

Mine work flawlessly through Sleep mode - I suggest you do a Factory Reset on your camera. That's really the only way to start from scratch and get it to work properly if you're seeing unusual behaviour from the Virb.

Power Off, hold Down arrow, Power On, say yes to "Clear All Settings".

I'm with GEOMONSER, no problem with the remote waking my Elite and taking video on command.

+1 but I also had to turn the Elite off before the remote could wake the Elite (that was with firmware 3.20)

I will try a factory reset and give it a try.
Is the sleep mode associated with power save mode different from the sleep mode entered when power save is off (timed at about 2 minutes idle before entering)?
  • Setup/System/Power Save actually turns the camera off, I seem to recall. I don't use that mode anymore. The camera uses very little power in sleep mode, but it's much faster to resume recording so I let it sleep.
  • After testing "Setup/System/Power Save" this morning, it looks to me like having "Remote" on, on the camera, must disable the complete power off you'd normally get from that setting. My camera did not shut down even though I had it set to do so.
  • That is exactly the case - I turned off Remote in my Elite this morning and Setup/System/Power Save allowed the camera to turn itself off after about 10 minutes, after a short period of "Press key to wake up".

    I tried the master reset.
I have power save turned off in the system settings of the virb elite.
I have remote enabled, synced and working.
After about 2-3 minutes the camera goes into "press any key to wake up". In this state the remote works just fine.
Wait longer ~10 minutes, I think after the remote auto shuts off, and nothing you do will cause the remote to wake up the camera. The remote acts as if it can't find the camera.

yep, same problem. The remote (my Vivofit band) simply won't connect to the Virb at all. Totally useless. How do i prevent the "press any key to wake up" mode. The camera is remote (which is why I use a remote), so I can't press any key to wake it up.

My understanding is that even in "sleep" mode the Virb is still recording the GPS data and when you start recording the video and GPS data will align more quickly.
I've been very pleased with the way my new Virb remote works, much more reliable than using my Edge as a remote.
It didn't work too well yesterday as I picked up the wrong Virb Elite and ended up with two extended Virb's on the bike instead of a Master and Extended. :o
