VIRB Elite Sensor dropouts

#1 - I am not seeing a subforum for the VIRB, just VIRB Edit... so I'm posting this here:

1 out of 3 times I use the Virb Elite, my sensors drop out (Power Meter and HR). I ride with an Edge 500 too, and they are fine with that device. For video, I have been able to replace the fit file with my edge's, but I bought the elite so I did not have to do that. Fit file attached.

On a side note... is there a way to only record data when you are recording video? I have my Virb mounted on my handlebars upside down... easy to turn on/off video recording, but not easy to interact with other buttons. As such, I often forget to turn off the camera after the race... you'll notice in the attached file that I did not turn off the virb until I got home.
  • I have been having a bear of a time with ANT+ dropouts on the Virb Elite. Anyone have ideas what I can do to mitigate them?

It's particularly bad with my Stages power meter, but most everything is flakey.

Configuration: VIRB elite on a K-edge pointed just forward of my handlebars. Garmin temperature probe on seat post. Trek duo trap in the usual place (Domane 6.9). Stages power meter on the left crank. Scosche Rhythm+ on my right arm.

iPhone/RFLKT+ on stem/handlebars (Wahoo PROTKT case). Power, HRM and RFLKT+ paired using BTLE to iPhone. Duotrap Speed/Cadence paired via ANT+ through the RFLKT+.

Garmin FR620 on left wrist. Usually just leave it home unless I'm running, but thought I'd use it as a third data recorder.

Garmin FR620 and VIRB just using ANT+ (simultaneous ANT+/BTLE broadcast by Stages and Rhythm, ANT+ broadcast by Duotrap).

VERY different experience with the three data loggers...

FR620: Got all the sensors perfectly (except power, which it is designed to not support)... http://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/565171723

Wahoo Fitness/RFLKT: Really did well (not sure why the 1m power drop, but that's around the place where I took a "rolling rest")

The Virb. Yuck. I particularly like the "max speed" of 146mph while the bike was standing still.

    Hi RSKAUFMANN,

Can I suggest that you ensure that you are running the most current firmware (2.80 I think it is) and that you also perform a Master Reset on your Virb - doing a Master Reset fixed a similar issue I had with my Virb Elite.

    cheers
    Mike
  • I am on that most up-to-date firmware release. I just did another master reset (previous ones were on earlier firmware versions), so will give it another try on Saturday.

Thanks for the thoughts. I also put this into Garmin support, who I expect will give me the same answer. I'm not sure why "dumb as dirt" ANT+ data logging should be such a challenge...

I bought Garmin HRM3 and Garmin tempe-sensor. Sensors are paired and tried only with Virb Elite v.3.80. Master reset was done after firmware upgrade. Sensors data was shown on Virb display correctly. First recording with sensors was about 40min and both sensors dropped out. First dropped HRM3 after 13 minutes and tempe 10 seconds after that. Are there any news to get sensors working with Virb Elite?

I guess all of these dropouts also impact the Virb remote, right? As quite often my remote stop working (just flashes red when pressing a button) after a few minutes. During the first minutes I am able to start/stop recording and taking photos, but then it drops out completely and normally only come back after a reboot of the camera. I take it this is ANT+ dropout related just as for the sensors?
  • HI RSKAUFMANN - Somewhat related question on your Stages and Domane 6.9 compatibility. I have heard some conflicting information on whether stages power meter will work with the Domane 6.9 Dura Ace 9000. Did you have any issues with frame clearance on that frame? Thanks in a advance
  • Hi JKTRIMAN,

I have a *2013* Domane 6.9 and a Shimano Di2 *Ultegra*. No problem at all. It really doesn't matter what you have on the drive side of the bike; the single-legged Stages is on the left side, so completely away from everything. The big issue was really clearing the built-in duo trap sensor (or its blank insert). Pic link below...

thanks to this thread I have found out that my virbElite has never connected to my sensors properly. Master reset etc has now sorted it. Now just have fi my Brompton to do some filming, pfft. Always a step forward then back in this game eh? :P
