Windows 7 computer doesn't recognize VIRB

I plug the USB cable into both my computer and the VIRB.
The lights flash green then red on the VIRB.
The battery icon shows and then the USB connected icon on the VIRB.
Then they disappear, all lights go off on the VIRB, and it powers off.
It is never recognized.
When I go into Device Manager on my PC it shows the Garmin VIRB breifly with an exclamation mark (says its not connected) and after the VIRB powers off this disappears.

I DON'T believe it's the VIRB b/c when I connect it to a different Windows 7 computer, it works / is recognized just fine.

Of course, the problem is that I really need to use it with this computer that won't recognize it.

Any ideas?

Although this is the MAC section.....
I've had that problem too, with my 1st and 2nd VIRB Elite.
    I used different cables.
Also used several ports on a Laptop, my home Desktop and the desktop at work, all Win7 x64 pro.
It seemed to occur when the battery was not fully charged.
Only have my 3rd VIRB Elite for half a day now.

    Boy ....... that's discouraging.
    On your 3rd?
Strange thing is that this VIRB (I just got) works / connects fine to another computer I have. It's just a computer that I really can't use for the VIRB.
I really hate to have to return this brand new VIRB b/c of this (what a PITA) but guess I will if I have to. I'll try a bit more trouble shooting first I guess.
Maybe I'll try to FULLY charge it and see if that works.
Any other advice / suggestions much appreciated!!!!

  • Just tried with a full charge.
    Nada.
It recognizes for a split second and then the VIRB powers off.
    Very strange.
If it didn't work on my other computer, I'd just return it but I'm just afraid I'd be in the same boat with a different VIRB.
    Hmmmm........
    What to do?

the biggest problem with the 1st was the USB problem although it had some lockups
the 2nd besides not responding to the remote and a few lockups had a habit of starting and leaving the screen black except fot the icons. Sometimes presing UP a few times would restore the viewer. It was almost one start OK than the next was black.
This one does not seem to have the USB problem.
It does lose the remote connection after some time (half an hour to one hour).
Also had one lockup where I had to keep the on/off pressed to shut it down.

    Hello All-

I was able to get my pc (WIN7) to recognize my VIRB Elite by reformatting the SD card and by choosing the other formatting type - for example NTSF vs. FAT or whatever it is. VIRB works great now! Prior to this it was locking up in all kinds of situations, wouldn't record/respond to record 'slider', wouldn't recognize Garmin Updater or VIRB Edit software, etc.

Once the card was reformatted (I beleive using the non-NTSF protocol) it works fine. Records, responds as I think it should, no lock ups, pairs with my Samsung Note II phone, etc., etc., etc. When you hear hoofbeats think horses, NOT zebras.
