Those Having Lockups Care To Try?

im starting to think (based on my usage and what others have said) that these lockups arent occurring off of freshly formatted cards + hard reset of the hardware. is it possible virb edit and/or removing the old files is giving the camera fits?

i plan to hard reset the device each time i plan to go use it and to format the card as well. if others want to try this and report back maybe we can isolate the issue as garmin continues with the "this is not a known issue"

I am having no issues with mine. 3.20. I pre purchased mine, so I have an initial roll out camera. As I continue to watch these posts of others having lock ups, both here and on You Tube, I am beginning to wonder if there is a flaw in the post roll out camera's. I know for a fact of one that sent his in and Garmin replaced it. His second one appears even worse. He even went to a faster card with no luck. I know there is a discussion about the Exfat vs Fat 32 format. I have the Red and grey SDXC 64Gig card, and I have no issues. I feel Lucky but at the same time disheartened to see so many going through these issues. I did experience lock ups with the 3.10 firmware. 3.20 fixed mine. Sadly we are 12 days away from the three month mark waiting on the next firmware update. One cannot get any answers out of Garmin/Virb firmware guys. We can't even get an answer from Garmin as to what card should be used. The Virb Edit team, is very nice, and quick to respond. Maybe some one needs to get appointed to be the spokes person on here for strictly a VIRB Thread. I appreciate the "masters and Senior members" input. However since they apparently are not Garmin Employees, They seem to Speak as if they are Gods. However, I have just as much experience with this camera than they do. I have 7 Action camera's, Three from goPro, a Drift ghost, Contour Plus, Sony AS-15, and the Virb elite, I also had the JVC action Cam (dumped it very quickly). So I have spoken my piece on this subject. I feel the problem lies in the Firmware, But as previously stated we get 0, Zilch, no feedback from that team. So we all get to sit on the lily pad, like the frogs, that are awaiting the bug to fly by. (awaiting the next firmware update to fix our ails). As of last month, when some one asks me for an opinion on this camera, I simply state, It's not ready yet. I inturn appreciate your experience, and your offer for your fix. That seems to be all we can rely on is each other user. As far as the "this is not a known issue" thing, That just goes to show you that none of them read the forums. (probably not their emails either). As I have emailed them and never received a response. Feeling better? I am not.
  • That's an interesting idea, however, I've had a brand new card lockup out of the box - never exposed to VIRB EDIT or even my MAC). But I'll keep it in mind as I try to get to the root cause of the problem for Garmin.

I have a feeling on the card issue - all the class 10 cards should work no matter how they're formatted. It's not a memory card issue. Garmin would love it if it was, but it's not. It's something else.

BTW - I couldn't agree with NAVYTHOMAS8 more - Garmin really ought to frickin' own up to having a problem and let owners know if they have any idea what the issue is, what they're doing to fix it and approximately when we can expect a solution might be ready.

A little openness and honesty would go a long way in restoring my faith in Garmin. This isn't a GM Ignition Switch or Toyota Gas Pedal for God sakes.

+10 Bro! Just wait till the gods descend on this one. They will state, one has five of these camera's and has no issues. I have 1 and have many issues, fortunately it has not locked up since 3.10. I know I have tried to work with you on yours, I would like to thinks we have tried Amongst three of us, to try and remedy the situation. It makes me sick to see others going thru these issues and getting the cone of silence from garmin. Once again I applaud the Edit team, FALAGAR especially for responding. But if the camera, doesn't work correctly, There is NOTHING the video editing team can do to solve it.

scratch that... while i did get a 30min recording right off the bat with a freshly formatted extreme sandisk sd and a hard reset virb, it froze repeatedly after that 1st freeze (got footage from the 1st recording but none of the rest).

i even turned off gps on the last recording and it still froze.

taking this unit back to the retailer today to see if they can speed the return process. im sure a 2nd unit will do the same but this unit is worthless as it captures 1/10 of the footage i try to if im lucky...

garmin support tells me to ship them my unit and wait 3 weeks for a new one. wont fess up that theres an issue. this seem acceptable to anyone else?

FWIW: When I tried my Virb Elite for the first few times I put in a previously used Sandisk 64 GB card that I had, and I experienced a number of random hangs and freezes. I have now replaced it with a new 32 GB card and I have not had any problems. I had difficulties from time to time with the 64 GB card in my PC too, and so I did suspect it.

I just wonder if it is card read / write errors not being handled properly that caused some of my issues.

I fear that Garmin device development / support will never respond to Forum threads, and I view them as a way of customers helping themselves - which they are of course. I had all sorts problems with my Garmin Edge 800 and reported them diligently and with optimism. I have leant from experience that Garmin do not seem to do much in the way of customer support on their devices, and you have to live with / work round the problems - or buy something else. They are not alone in their attitude I am afraid and have had similar disappointments from HP, Microsoft, and even Apple devices are not perfect. Sigh ...

ive used several 32gb cards (including high end ones) all class 10 and still have lockups... i suspect the new unit i get eventually will also have this issue and its something garmin hopefully addresses someday.

and yes, their customer service is some of the worst.
ive owned plenty of their products in the past and currently own the virb elite, edge 810, and 910xt. all of which have/had issues. i guess i like to be frustrated.

I've got mine replaced by Garmin.
    They told it was broken.
    I had some lockups.
Connecting to UBS with the battery not full, most of the time made go ON, than OFF, with a little bit of USB mode in between.
The other times it would see the USB as external powersource.
Only with a fully charged battery there was a chance to get it in USB mode.
When the new one was in at the shop I asked them to test it before I would pick it up.
So they tested it, and now I'm doing some tests.
First run today, no lockups, went to USB mode with the battery half charged without problems.
(still the same µSD Sandisk SDXC 64GB)

Shouldn't said that about the USB.
Today, after turning the camera it wouldn't react to the remote.
I re-paired the remote as I almost only controll the VIRB from remote.
On my way to work I took some pictures and some video's, I also took some pictures while recording video (will need to look at that later).
Almost at work I tried to turn the video-recording OFF, but the camera didn't responded to the remote (distance ±40cm).
I stopped the recording by sliding the switch to record and that back again.
I could stop the VIRB in a normal way.
In the office I connected the VIRB Elite to the PC.
The camera decided to use the USB as external power.
After some tries, I succeded to get it in USB mode.
Yesterday I also had some mines issues. I could turn the camera on, the text and icons appeared on the screen, but the view stayed black.
Turning the camera off, than on again solved it. But I had this several times.
So this one is also going back to Garmin.
