Feature request: Cross computer clip sync

Hello GARMIN!
I don't know if the public forum is the best way to make a feature request, but I don't know of any better channel so here it goes:

I mostly like my VIRB (Elite), but there is one thing that really bugs me.

Usecase
I have a workstation at home on which I edit clips. I have a laptop that I bring with me on travels on which I can dump clips from the VIRB on a daily basis. When I get home I want to transfer clips, gps traces and everything from my laptop to my workstation so they become available for editing there.

Problem
There does not seem to be a way to do this using VIRB Edit.

Suggested solution
This is my suggestion on how it could work:
  • Add an option called "External Clip Library Location" in the Options view. The external clip library location could be a mapped network drive or any other network location supported by the operating system (NFS/SSHFS on *NIX systems?. In my example, I would set up my laptop to sync with a shared folder on my Windows workstation.
  • Add an action "Sync with external clip library" somewhere in the main screen.
  • When the user choses "Sync with external clip library", VIRB Edit will merge the new local clips AND gps traces with the ones in the external clip location.
  • Get awesome feedback from your users.

Please also consider implementing the below changes and make the community happy:
  • Make it possible to flip a video upside down.
Pitch: It's quite easy to forget to change the "This side up" setting on the VIRB in the heat of action when you change mount orientation.
  • Put a UTC timestamp in the filenames of the video clip and gps trace AND/OR add a counter that does not reset to 0001.
Pitch: This will give unique file names and automatically solve the current mess due to clip counter being reset to 0001. It will make manual clip management easier if cross computer clip sync is not implemented.
  • Make VIRB Edit store video and metadata in close proximity, so it is obvious which files belong together.
Pitch: It will make manual clip management easier if cross computer clip sync is not implemented.

Please consider the above so I can stay with GARMIN instead of going to a competitor ;)

Thanks!

Good suggestions, we'll see what we can do.

TBH, I don't see cross computer clip sync happening anytime soon. The poor man's solution would be to not delete the videos from your device till you have imported them on both computers.

Flipping videos is planning for a near release.
Not resetting the counter for file names is also planned as far as I know.
Maybe we can add a setting that will allow storing the gpx file alongside the clip when you import.

    Thanks for your input.

That would be good steps in the right direction.

I think there is a way to copy your clips from your laptop to your workstation, but it's a lot of work.
Install VIRB Edit on your laptop and import the clips there.
When you get home, do the following.
    - copy or move the clips , from the clip-library directory of the laptop to the clip-library of your workstation.
    - copy or move the "RawMovies" (clips), the "MoviesProjects" and the "FIT"-data in the VE database from your laptop to your workstation.
You will find the database here (Win7 x64) C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit\Database\2
The directories to move have names like this "d1f81723-9987-4a66-aadd-e2e2d5b904ca".
Inside them there are thumbs that will give you an idear about the clip or movie.
Inside the clip and movie directories are .xml files.
In there files is the clip-location specified.
You will need to edit these by hand for VE to find the clip.

Maybe a better idear, make a directory on the laptop and copy everything (clips, data and the structure) from the VIRB to this dir.
Make a virtual disk on your workstation and copy al the files from the dir to this drive.
VE might see this dir as a VIRB and try to import the clips.

I have not and cannot test this as I don't have a VIRB at this moment.

I fully agree with this. I too go on a trip with my notebook and would like to edit all this later on my PC.

Or is there already a way to accomplish this? Some bypass?

    Possible Workaround?

Would a possible workaround be to install Virb Edit on both PC's, and download from the Virb twice - once to each computer? If any video edit is created, this new video file can be copied easily between any computers - there will be no need to worry about any data going with the clips.

It will mean creating any custom overlays twice (once on each computer) - unless there is an easy method to copy them between the computers. It would also mean only being able to wipe existing clips from the Virb (to free up space) only after the import to the second computer.

Any chance this method would work?
