When is VIRB EDIT 2.5.0 being released?

so is Microsoft software and you are lucky if they release a patch or an update unless its security related once every 12 months...just be thankful that one of Virb Edit's developers is willing to even appear here on this board.

Virb Edit 2.5.0 will be released when it's ready and not because of your impatience.

You make no argument comparing Virb Edit to Microsoft! LOL. That is not even remotely close! 'B' for effort though.

The fact is the software is broken and one could argue that it is more broken than the previous version. I don't even bother to use it most of the time anymore.

Yes, there is a person on the Virb Edit team appearing on here and acknowledging issues, but that is an expectation of the forums set up by Garmin to support their products. This team hasn't really broken any new ground here. What is a failure on their part is stating "It [Virb Edit 2.5.0] will be released when it's ready". Is that supposed to make the customer feel better? Imagine if it were like that when you dropped off you car for maintenance and got that kind of reply when asking for a time estimate.

I certainly would not recommend this product to anyone right now if they were wanting to use the software. They released version 2.4.0 and it feels more like version 0.8.0. I have no idea who there determined it was good enough to come out of beta and is now on it's second major release cycle but I feel that was a mistake.

Since you add overlays to a "Video" and not to clips, that's not surprising. Don't confuse user error for bugs. I just tried and found no way to add an overlay to a clip, but it's easy to do with a Video. I just put together (and exported at 1080p, using OS X) a 2:40 video yesterday, and although it's tedious since I had to replace the GPS track, the overlay was easy to do.

Forgive my terminology mistake. I created a "video" and added my single "clip" that was recorded with my Virb Elite to the video. Overlays will not display. I even tried to manually add my data from my Edge 800 instead and it still won't allow me to add overlays to the video. Something has become corrupt. This was different from every other time I've used the software but since it has been so buggy, I didn't spend too much time trying to troubleshoot the issue.

As Falagar stated, VIRB and VIRB Edit are very high priorities. Our plan since 2.0 has been to release a new VIRB Edit feature release every 6-9 weeks depending on the set of new features through 2.6. Because of this very aggressive schedule, we are typically not releasing maintenance (.1) releases. The next planned release after 2.6 will (probably) be 3.0 and a bit later. I can't emphasis enough that is our plan and may end up being grossly inaccurate based on changing situations. So far it's been pretty accurate, but we don't want to release software with new features and break things that already worked, though it does happen. We appreciate user's patience as VIRB Edit has grown from a very basic video viewing and publishing application, to a much more full blown editing application. There have been hiccups, but also some tremendous advances.

Thank you for the response azdrmn. A development cycle timeline was what I was hoping for in the beginning to show Garmin's commitment and set the customer's expectations.

The software has tremendous potential and while in it's current state can be frustrating to use, I can certainly wait a few more weeks to see what enhancements and fixes are part of the release.

I would agree that 0.0.1 releases would typically not be necessary on a 6-9 development cycle but for features that are inadvertently broken during a release cycle and quite easy to correct, it might be an easy win to do a small bump and get it off the plate rather than leaving the feature disabled for a couple months (small steps forward, no steps back).

Hopefully, your team will be able to maintain the 6-9 week development cycle long enough to get the major bugs dealt with which would give you some breathing room to work on new features. I'll be eagerly anticipating this next release. :)

This 6-9 week schedule should mean that 2.5 is imminent, my fingers are crossed, that I will actually be able to use the software - I suffer from the "error playing video" problem, meaning after 2 months of ownership I have yet to be able to create a video :0/

I've not created a video via Virb Edit at all due to the bugs, as I capture everything at 60fps (useful for sports training feedback), but here's how I'm setup:

Laptop:
Virb Edit 2.3 - for previewing newly captured videos (not full screen) on the go with speed/gps overlays. Not for rendering (does not render gforce data properly).

Desktop:
Virb Edit 2.4 - for previewing videos full screen without speed/gps overlays (does not match). Not for rendering.
Dashware - for rendering videos (overlay data is accurate). Takes longer to set up.


If Dashware 2.5 fixes the high-fps mismatch issues, I can then upgrade the laptop copy as that's the only issue I haven't upgraded it to 2.4 (and 2.4 has much better playback performance than 2.2/2.3).

You probably mean VIRB Edit 2.5 instead of Dashware :)
