Virb Forum?

Am I just overlooking a forum for the Virb/Virb Elite camera itself?

I have an Elite, only had a chance to use it about 5 times so far, but on two of those the unit froze up (first time about 2 minutes into the ride, the second time about 50 minutes into the ride).

With so few rides I don't know if it's an issue or just one of those things that happened to occur so soon. Not an Edit issue, but I don't seem to see a forum for the camera itself.

No, you are not overlooking it, there just isn't.
Please send your complaints about your VIRB directly to the Garmin Hardware guys http://www.garmin.com/us/support
The VIRB (Elite) has a habit of locking up, not responding to a remote and not wanting to go to storidge mode when the battery is not fully charged, even when fully charged it is still hit and miss.
Also the FIT file is only stored after a normal shutdown, locking up means no data from the session.
I hope they will change it soon, but they are shielded form the customers by internet forms.

    Corrected that for you.

Perhaps yours does all those things, but the three Elites I have here show none of that nasty behaviour.
  • Well, he's not alone because mine does it too. I get home from a ride, flip the switch to stop recording and the red activity light just keeps on blinking until the battery dies or I forcibly turn off the unit. Either way, my recording is gone and so is the .fit file.
  • I never said nobody else was affected but it's not everyone. I have three Elites and none do that. I can only speak for myself, as he should too.
  • The fact that any are locking up and exhibiting this behaviour is not good, it maybe that the way you use yours is different to the way that others who are experiencing problems (there are so many options and configurations). So everyone should have their say and should try and provide as much information as possible about what steps can re-produce the behaviour to assist in troubleshooting / fixing.

PS. A dedicated forum for discussing camera issues should have been created a long time ago, rather than cluttering up the VIRB Edit forums and the great work done here. I have asked many times but given up now!

can you list details associated with your use because mine locks up multiple times EVERY ride for 6 rides in a row now and ive hard reset, reformatted cards, turned off wifi and stabilization yadda yadda. im recording in 720p 60fps and dont care if it works in less than 60fps because thats not what i bought it for so havent been testing those other modes.

    so...

    what card(s) are you using?
what mode(s) are you recording in?
have you ever had a lock up?
how long do you record for on average/at the most?

anyone else care to share these details? maybe we can find a common variable. i dont want to ditch the unit but its pretty worthless to me right now and ive found users online that have gotten new unit replacements from garmin and the same issue occurs.
  • I generally record at 720P/30FPS for compact file sizes but sometimes I use 1080P/30FPS. I experimented with all the formats recently to get an idea of the differences in file size, and none of those tests failed, though they were only 6 minutes each.

Recently I've been using mostly "Record When Moving" and it's been totally flawless - I get whole days worth, 2.5 batteries used, and have not had a failure/lockup in weeks. My wife uses hers to take 10 second time lapse photos. Both cameras are usually mounted on our motorcycle helmets or on the dash of the car.

We always start the day by using the Virb to clear out the previous day's recordings/pictures.

Our cards are mainly ADATA Premier 16 Gb and 32 Gb, and a couple of Sandisk Ultras in 32 Gb size.

I have had lockups in the past but since we stopped pulling the battery to clear those lockups, the cameras have been much more reliable. I might have had three lockups in the last month, and at least one was caused by using the WiFi app my Monterra. I find the Monterra's WiFi to be buggy, so perhaps the Virb isn't to blame there.

thanks for the info. very different than your original post saying yours dont lock up...

im starting to suspect 60fps recording may be too much for the virb as one other user that records almost exclusively in 60fps has the constant issue like me.
  • I certainly have found it more reliable at 1080p 30fps than when I was using 720p 60fps.

Really? They lock up so rarely that I don't consider it worth worrying about. I use mine a lot. Virtually all the time I travel one or more is recording. If they locked up as often as my GoPros did, I'd be pissed off like you, but I haven't said anything "very different than my original post".
