Dear Virb Edit Team,
I have recently bought a Virb Elite specifically for the Overlay Feature - for all different types of Garmin/ANT+ data.
After some tests with Virb Edit 2.4 I noticed multiple gaps in the Software which made me articulate this feature request.
Gaps/Problems (partly already stated in other Posts already):
a) 4GB file Limit on Windows 7
b) Editing process on timeline not very comfortable / lack of many features a Video Editing Software usually delivers
c) MP4 Output / Rendering engine - Quality medium in normal/medium brightness parts of the Picture - significant Artefacts in darker sections (tunnel walls) - Quality is much worse than original footage from the Virb
To overcome these problems I followed the tipps provided here in some posts to create the Data Overlays with a Bluebox Background and then combine the 2 tracks / original Virb footage + Overlay with Chromakeying in a professional Video Editing Software. (No matter which one, as many on the market can do the job).
Results:1) Rendering the Overlays with BlueBox / Single Color Background in Virb Edit delivered an 800 MB file for 1h 5min of Video -> a) 4GB Problem resolved for me / as I do not expect to have single Videos of more than 4 hours
2) Combining overlay with the original footage in the professional editing Software - just a few clicks - so no Problem at all / + all Kind of editing / Color correction / ... Features available -> b) resolved
3) Rendering engine - at least of the product I used - significantly better + Option to no only render for Youtube / Internetstreaming / but also any other Formats and Sizes I want to create required / in high Quality Settings, no artefacts, Output as good as Virb Input file -> c) resolved
Open issue:Creating the bluebox Background is a a lot of manual work. Since I also wanted to have the full GPS track shown in the overlay / bluebox MP4 file, I had to create a Blue Box Source MP4 file of exactly the same length as my Virb source files. Then import these Blue Box source files to Virb Edit and associate the Blue Box source files with the GPX files of the corresponding original Virb MP4 files. Last step was to put them on the timeline in correct GPS track/timeline sequence.
That process works ok if you have only a view / probably long / source files. I will not work in acceptable way, if a high number of short Clips shall be put together.
Feature request:Add a feature to Virb Edit allowing to Output the MP4 with only the BlueBox / Chroma key Background + the overlays. Ideally with the Option to define the Bluebox Color by Setting RGB Color codes. This would allow anybody willing to go the way with an external Video Editor to easily create the Overlay source file (which is the reason why many of us have bought a Virb and not something else). With this we could use any Video Editing Software / either Commercial or open source, which then can do the Job.
I actually would not even expect that Virb Edit will ever substitute those products in functional richness. So please help us to easily use those tool - while leveraging the unique feature of the VIRB data recording and overlay displaying.
Looking forward to see such feature in the near future :) Thanks.
