Virb Edit - There was an error playing the video

That's about all I know... Just got the camera today, and when I try to play a video through Virb Edit, it just says "There was an error playing the video"
I have updated the camera firmware and Virb Edit software to the latest versions...

Is there any easy fix for this, or is it just a random bug?
Thank you!

*UPDATE* Fixed! Updated my graphics card, and now Virb Edit plays videos just fine.

Geomonster - Sounds like you're making a big deal out of YOUR computer configuration. That's your prerogative - but for the rest of us, we're *pissed off* that the software does not appear to do what it is advertised to do.

I've got the same problem - but only for videos recorded (and downloaded) today. I got my Virb Elite only yesterday (and updated the firmware to 3.70 before using the unit at all), and the videos I downloaded yesterday play fine in Virb Edit. All the clips from today give the helpful and informative (not!!) 'video could not be played' error.

All clips (both from today and from yesterday) play fine in:
    - WMP
    - VLC Media Player
    - WMP-HC

So, guess what my money will be on as being at fault?

    System specs:
    Windows 7 x64
    6Gb RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5790
    Garmin Virb Edit 2.5.0
    Intel i7 (8 core)
And no - nothing updated itself since yesterday (Windows and all my apps are set to notify me to apply updates. There were no such notifications)

    What I have tried:
Removing a clip from Garmin Edit, and reimporting it from the folder where it was downloaded to.
Removing the clip and reimporting it from my Virb Elite (luckily I hadn't deleted the originals on my memory card).

Neither solved the problem. The clip still plays fine in WMP, VLC, etc.....

P.S. For the love of Pete, *please* can the Mods / Admin create a dedicated forum for the Virb & Virb Elite - separate to the forum for Virb Edit? Every other piece of hardware sold by Garmin which uses software appear to have separate forums for them; the sole exception that I can see being the Virb.
There are forums for each model of cycling / running computer - and *separate* forums for Garmin Express. There are even separate forums for the PC and Mac versions. There is a separate forum for the mobile application. There's a separate forum for Garmin Connect. But everything for the Virb just gets thrown in one big forum.
    Why is this?

The same reasons all these separate forums have been created for everything else apply *equally* to the Virb...

Yes, that's right. It's MY fault that my computer works for every other piece of software and hardware but doesn't work for Virb Edit.

Yes, geomonster, you're right. That's TOTALLY my fault. I apologize.

I clearly should buy a new computer so I can use my Virb. Or at least a new video card. (Though Garmin didn't recommend either of these, or suggest any other action to fix the problem, I should have clearly read their mind and done what they obviously wanted me to do.)

It's clearly also MY fault that Garmin has NO suggestions for how to resolve this, other than to "upgrade my video driver", which I've already done. I'm sorry I caused that problem, too. Boy, I'm clueless, aren't I?

I also need to apologize to Garmin Support, who confirmed to me that "we are still working on this issue". I'm sorry that I bothered you with what is clearly entirely MY fault. I'm sure you had more important things to do than answer my email.

Yep, I'm clearly the one at fault here. I bought a $400 product which I only got to use once in 5 months, and I should learn to be satisfied with that.

I certainly need an attitude adjustment, and need to understand that this is normal and expected for Garmin products, and that if a Garmin product doesn't work after I perform all the diagnostic and workaround procedures that Garmin suggests ... well, obviously I've done something wrong.

Again, I apologize to everyone - geomonster especially - who I've offended by wanting my Garmin product to work, when obviously everything is my fault.

    My bad.

Geomonster, thanks for suggesting Dashware. Looks very interesting, and like an excellent alternative to the Garmin Virb. Especially since I always carry a separate GPS anyway, it really makes the Virb Elite unnecessary. It looks like Dashware will let me have the Virb Elite functionality with my new GoPro, so I don't need the Virb at all.

    Returning the Virb tomorrow.

    Thanks!

    ...Sam
  • You sent me an email? Never got it, if you did.

Good luck with GoPro. I hated the three I had.

But I didn't have a public meltdown about it.

Add me to the list. Mine will only work if I shut my computer down and reboot it. If I just shut the program down and reopen it, it will still show an error. It is frustrating. My videos do play in other video playback software fine. I seem to be fine during the editing process. It acts up when I open the video from the library. Which I might add is one video because I just bought the Elite. Oh if I had a dollar for every time I buy a Garmin product and go through a issue. I just come back to the well because Garmin seems to get it right finally and it is good stuff. I should just buy after I read all the problems are solved.

The video player in VIRB Edit 2.5 definitely has some issues. We have pretty much entirely revamped the player in 2.6 and hope that it will work much more smoothly for you guys. It's not quite ready it, but we hope to release it soon.

Thank you for your patience, and I apologize again for the trouble.

I understand the frustration of SJSAMDRAKE, I have had my elite for several months and it is not the simple and easy to use product I thought I was purchasing, seems the video card in my laptop is subpar and I get the dreaded "error playing video" message, all drivers are latest versions.

This laptop IS capable of playing the virb videos using microsofts "Video" player and I have been able to edit virb videos in other programs (but this is far from a seamless process). This machine is more than capable of everything I ask of it, replacing it is not my best option at the moment (I have several business programs which would greatly at to the cost of upgrading). I know it would not be a chosen laptop for dedicated video editing, but it's been proven up to the task.

I have and have had numerous other Garmin products, I chose this camera as I wanted to integrate video with heart rate data, bicycle speed, cadence and power plus data from my training watches (all Garmin) - as this product was advertised to do. I also sail, paddleboard and kayak and wanted the waterproof rating.

It was never my intention to make feature films, it was my hope to be able to post 15-20 sec cycling, paddling or sailing clips to social media, I understand that I chose to purchase a new product and that the software continues to improve (for some), but I would like to see basic functionality be provided before gauges are added or tweaked.

I have found Garmin to be a good company to deal with in the past, they have resolved hardware issues quickly and have a great warranty program.
Nevertheless I have been and remain disappointed in the Virb (which seems glitchy) and the Edit software which is unusable for me.

With each revision of Edit I eagerly retry the software, but continue to be disappointed, therefore, like SJSAMDRAKE, I can't, in good conscience, recommend the Virb to anyone.

As the saying goes, "The plot thickens!"

I ride pretty much every day, and every day I record video. Some days Virb Edit will play the videos; other days it will not. I have not noticed any pattern to this - seems to be completely random.

At least I can watch SOME of my videos and see speed, cadence, etc. But I didn't buy the Virb to see only SOME of them in this way. This is NOT what was advertised; this is NOT what I paid for.

In the meantime I have been notified that there is an update for Virb Edit - some more templates and dials have been added.

So, while we are completely unable to use the software at all for many of our videos - the programmers have been playing with pretty graphics. Obviously this is more important than getting the software to actually work; pretty pictures have a higher priority......

    Form over function.......

Are we supposed to be reassured by this? Is this supposed to placate us in some way?
  • You don't get it do you? There is no way Garmin could possibly have every configuration and permutation of Windows systems to test on. There will be some, like yours, which are troublesome to figure out but it's not by slagging the company that you'll find the solution.

I get that I bought a product with the expectation that it would work as advertised, I get that you are happy with your virb, because it works for you, I would also suggest that if it didn't then you would get a better understanding of the dissatisfaction of those who paid for something that wasn't ready for release.

My laptop will play videos from the virb, virb edit will not. There are enough comments from different people here to prove that I am not alone, I believe that the virb edit development team should concentrate on making the basic functions of the program available to all.
