Power Meyer / cadence data not appearing in Virb edit

Hi all

I have a Garmin Elite connected to a Stages power mater and to a Garmin cadence / speed sensor. The cadence magnet for the speed / cadence sensor has been removed as cadence is supplied by the stages meter. This works fine on my Garmin 810.

In virb edit no power or cadence data appears. Heart rate / speed / elevation all fine.

Any work around suggestions?

This must be about the 10th bug or issue I've had with the camera. It REALLY does not feel like a finished tested product at all.

    hi PA3FBO,

Think the issue for BostonXO was the lack of heartrate and cadence data showing, he never mentioned anything about power but having said that I can confirm that there are no power values whatsoever in that .fit file :)

    cheers

Power in the name of this thread??? It seemed he was missing this too. I assumend he ment Meter (gauge) with Meyer. T and Y are just two keys next t each other.

BostonXO wasn't the OP of the thread - he just joined in half way there lol

but now that you've explained it, I can see where the confusion has come from :D
  • I've fitted a clip to you FIT, there is cadence, but no power in 2.7.0

Thank you very much of reminding me to use basecamp to view the .fit file. On 21 Sep, my earlier ride all had cadence and heart rate data captured. It really was only the afternoon ride that the cadence and heart rate data were missing. I now use basecamp to open the 2014-09021 14:11:25 file and able to see that the virb elite has stop recording cadence and heart rate information from 9/21/2014 2:15:37pm (Index 251). I'm attaching the screen capture of the basecamp data and also the cadence and heart rate graph for your information. Thank you of taking the time to answer my question. Appreciate it.
  • hi BostonXO,

First thing is that the current firmware version for Virb is 3.80, although I note that you are in Hong Kong so I'm unsure if there is an Asia specific firmware for the Virb like there is for some Edge units.
If you haven't already got the Garmin Web Updater installed, then install it, attach your Virb to your computer and then run the Updater software. Point to note - IF there is a firmware update available and after it is installed and your Virb is powered back up then make sure you perform a Master Reset. I didn't after one of my firmware updates and I had no end of issues with sensor connections and dropouts until I performed a Master Reset.

Now to the .fit files - the applicable file is the 2014-09-21-10-59-17.fit insofar as that covers your entire ride. The other files are from any editing of your recording that you have done from within Virb Edit. As PA3FBO has said, there is heart rate and cadence data contained from the start to the end of the file although I note that there is a period of no cadence data and only sporadic heart rate data from 10:06am until 10:20am - I am assuming that you stopped somewhere over that time frame as your distance didn't increase.

One thing that the Fit File Repair Tool did pick up was that you had a 13 second jump into the past when you started recording... what effect that might have on your editing I am unsure but I have corrected it. Rename the original .fit file to something like 2014-09-21-10-59-17_orig.fit and then paste this 'fixed file' into the same folder. You will have to restart Virb Edit and restart your editing again and see if that changes anything.

Speaking of Virb Edit, are you running the latest version - 2.70? If you aren't then I would highly recommend that you give the latest version a try and see if that fixes the issue you are having. If however you already are then it's back to the drawing board on what the issue might be.

*EDIT* just re-read your original post and see that you are already running VE2.70.

    Cheers
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Thank you of the detail answer. I do have Garmin Web Update 2.5.6 but it is telling me my Virb Elite have the latest firmware (really do not know why. But I live in Hong Kong so I am not sure if Garmin choose to roll out firmware by region). I just answered PA3FPO and I believe PA3FPO was looking at the wrong .fit file. It should be the afternoon ride that the heart rate and cadence data were missing. Since my Virb Elite firmware is not up to date, I guess I will need to try pickup the latest firmware to see if this will fix the problem.

I am using the latest 2.7 Virb Edit.

You are right that I do not have power meter so I will not have that data. I was search to see if anyone have the same problem as I do and I found this thread. Sorry of jumping in and thank you for the help.
  • Hi Mike,

I just updated the latest Garmin Express 3.2.19.0 and Garmin Web Update 2.5.6 and tried to update my Virb Elite firmware. No luck. It says I have all the latest update but it is still showing software version 3.0 :confused:

    Hi BostonXO,

I would hazard a guess that Garmin has an Asia specific firmware for the Virb like they have for the Edges - like you, I have no idea why they do that. You could try contacting them on the Garmin Hong Kong Facebook page and see if you can illicit an answer from them there.

I am also going back to relook at the .fit file of your ride after you posted the pics of the cadence and heart-rate data dropping - why didn't I see that when I checked the file

And no issues with jumping in on a thread if you are having similar issues - well at least I don't think there is

    cheers

    Hi BostonXO,

I owe you a massive apology! I'm not sure what I did yesterday but I completely missed checking one of your .fit files, whether I thought it was a .fit file created through editing video with Virb Edit or I just overlooked it I'm not sure.

Yep, your Virb most definitely stop recording cadence and heart rate data! Mine used to do that as well but a combination of one of the firmware updates and a Master Reset resolved that issue but it looks like you are stuck with an Asia specific firmware version at the moment :(

    cheers
Mike <<<and an apologetic one at that
