VIRB Edit does not export my videos - What do I do?

We've made a lot of progress since VIRB Edit 2.0 trying to make sure that Export works on as many PCs as possible. Unfortunately, there are still some export issues out there. This is what you can do.

Are you running the latest version of VIRB Edit?

You can always find the most up-to-date version at http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6591.

Is your graphics card driver up to date?

Make sure it is, old and faulty drivers will interfere with VIRB Edit video playback and export.

Are you running BitDefender or some other Anti-Virus software?

We've had several users report that export does not work if they have BitDefender (www.bitdefender.com) Anti-Virus software running. Try disabling your Anti-Virus software temporarily and see if that fixes export in VIRB Edit. For BitDefender, exclude VirbEdit from the Active Virus Control (AVC). Then export should work.

We've also had some users report issues with other Anti-Virus software. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-download is excellent and free (and built-in in Windows 8).

Are you using videos from a VIRB device

We'd love for VIRB Edit to work with all sorts of video files. However, our main objective is to make sure it works with videos from VIRB cameras. If you do have trouble with non-VIRB videos, try setting the volume of your clips to 0, this has helped in some cases.

Try exporting from the Video Gallery, not from the Edit page

We've had some users report that Export works if they do it from the Video Gallery, but not if they export from the Edit page. We are looking into why that is, but in the mean-time, it's worth a try.

I get a warning about a 4GB file size limit, what's up with that?

On Windows 7 (not on Windows 8), the software we use to write video files has an unfortunate 4 GB file size limit. So if your video is too long, it will hit that limit and export will fail. To make matters worse, it will fail at the very end of a possibly very long export process. That is why VIRB Edit warns you that you might hit that limit. You can still attempt the export if you want to. To circumvent the 4 GB limit you could: a) make a shorter video, b) make a video at a lower resolution or c) upgrade to Windows 8. At 1080p, you should be able to squeeze about 25 minutes into 4GB.

None of the above is any help at all, I am running the newest version and I am using VIRB videos only, I swear!

Try another export, then locate the following folder on your hard-drive: C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\Local\Temp\VirbEdit\{Latest Version of VIRB Edit}. For me, currently running 2.6.2 this would be C:\Users\FALAGAR\AppData\Local\Temp\VirbEdit\2.6.2.

There should be at least one file in there named something like: ExportLog1392221853.txt.log. Send an email to [email protected], attach the log file(s) and let us know what kind of computer you are trying to use VIRB Edit with.

We are interested in:

  • Is it a Laptop or a Desktop?
  • Give us the model name if you can. (Something like "Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro", or "Dell Optiplex 990".)
  • How much RAM does your computer have?
  • What CPU does it have?
  • What GPU (graphics card) does it have and how much memory does that card have?

Be advised that video editing is a very computing-intensive task. So the faster your PC and GPU the better the experience will be. So exporting with a 4 year old netbook will probably not work very well.
  • Im extremely frustrated. I have compiled a movie of virb clips. Each clip is 4 to 7 seconds, with gps data syncd and exported from virb edit to 1080p at 60fps. I have approx 30 clips.
I have taken these clips and imported them into a new project. All Ive done is added a sound file to them. Now, Virb edit wont export anything over 720p @ 30fps for this 3 minute video. I cant get over 74% in 1080p or 25% in 720p @ 60fps. The program is still responsive. I can cancel the export after it stops. Task manager shows the cores just dropping off. HELP!!!

Not a real solution, but if it's only joining the clips, you could try AnyVideoConverter (free edition).
    http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/
When you add two or more clip you and select join all clips.
I have never used it, but it might work.
I have PowerDirector 12 and use that to join video's.
  • Yeah, i guess i will have to use something else.

Defeats the whole purpose of my video "365 days with the Garmin Virb and Virb Edit" Hard to promote the 'all in one' system.

unless you have Win8 or a MAC...you may cheat..;)
  • So, I was able to figure out why my video wont export.

After a few days of trial and error, I removed the song and transitions from the file, and exported at 1080p 60fps. This worked. Now my 26 clips are one clip. I made a new video in Virb Edit and added this single file to it, re-added the song, and put a transition at the beginning and end. This file also exported at 1080p 60fps. So the error in the new virb edit software has something to do with mulitple clips and a sound file I am presuming. Maybe the Garmin team can shed some light? You can view my vidoe here:

  • Windows 8.1 running i7-4710HQ with 16GB RAM NVIDIA GTX860M. I tried rolling back to the 2.6.1 BETA and it crashes even more often. I have to say that the old 2.5 iteration was more stable than this. Sure it had less features (no transitions, no rotation, less dashboards to choose from) but heck at least it works and you can export videos. 2.7.1 as it stands is a broken software. I DL'ed the Sony Action Cam software but unfortunately it does not work with Virb clips. Boo hoo.... Anyone has a link to the old 2.5 VE?
  • After further dabbling I find that :

    1. My old laptop Windows 7 i5 4GB RAM (integrated graphics card) runs 2.7.1.0 just fine and and export videos with no problems (even when heavily loaded with dashboards and transitions).
    2. My current Window 8.1 i7 16GB RAM Nvidia GTX860M would not export the same video as per 1.

In any case, I have emailed my crash logs as per instructions and we'll see what happens next.

This is CPU utilisation for trying to export a 3 min clip @ 1GB file size

  • Apologies for the multiple posts. I have solved my problem.

Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition is the culprit. Disabling scan or exiting the program does not stop it from running in the background. The Free version DOES NOT have settings for users to tweak the AVC and add Virb Edit to the exclusion list. A complete uninstall finally worked for me. Now I have to find myself another lightweight antivirus program which doesn't conflict with Edit ..

As it stands, VE 2.7.1.0 works flawlessly now. My bad for calling it a broken software earlier.
  • Great you figured it out! Maybe we should try to detect BitDefender and warn the user to make this more obvious.

(This is my personal take, I am no IT expert.) I don't believe you need extra Anti-Virus with Windows 8.1. The integrated one is equivalent to what Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) provided in Windows 7. And that was plenty good (and free). I've used MSE on Win 7 and the built in Anti-Virus on Win 8 on several machines for quite a few years now and never had any issues.
