What's new

  • Added customizable gauges. You can now add, move and delete gauges.
  • Added a lot more gauges, temperature is now supported.
  • Added ability to save and reuse custom gauges.
  • Added ability to easily import tracks from attached Garmin mass storage devices.
  • Widened range for clip playback speed (from 0.125x to 8x, up from 0.25x to 2x).
  • Fixed some errant behavior for g-force gauges.
  • Fixed export for pace gauges.
  • Fixed some more export issues.
  • Fixed an issue where file or track import was not working.
  • Fixed an issue where settings changes where not remembered after upgrading VIRB Edit.

Known Issues

  • A few strings have not been localized into non-English languages. They will be in 2.4.
  • Exporting a video when the NONE template is selected does not work. Will be fixed in a 2.3.x maintenance release very soon.
  • There are still some export issues. We are planning to address more of them in 2.3.x as well.
  • Export quality is still not as good as we'd like. 2.3.x should improve things here as well.

Please send us feedback

Please let us know if you encounter any issues. If there are any crashes, please send in the error reports, this really helps us out and we'll make sure to fix them.

Gauges for location, temperature, date/time and even a logo (if you like). Free placement and free choice of what you'd like to include.

Easier import of tracks directly from the device.
  • I have never been able to export any video using VIRB Edit for 2.0 on. I tried again with 2.3.1 and it now immediately gives the error message "there was an error exporting the video". Nothing is exported. With 2.2.5 it would get most of the way and then give an error message. I say most of the way based on file size. I have tried with different video and different lengths but same result. I have yet to be able to export. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64. My video card is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 120.

    Hi Falagar,

Why have a 4GB file size limit for the export file? There was no file size limit on the 2.2.3. I was happy with my 13GB outputs.... now I can't do my 2hr videos anymore.

We are working on more fixes. We should have a 2.3.x maintenance release out fairly soon (less than 3 weeks).

I've been testing a Little bit here, and it seems there's a problem with the memory handling. It seems you are trying to store the exported video in memory - or there's a memory leak, but everytime my pc reaches 1.1 gb of used memory during the export process, it dumps.

    A screencap:

Stay below that line and the export will Work fine - is my assumption...

PC is Windows 8, Core I5, 4 Gb of ram.
  • Just found that if 2.3.1 is installed, Garmin Mapsource disappears. Shortcut, EXE file, everything, is the VIRB Edit software taking the place in the registry that Mapsource used to? Am lucky in working in a computer based business and having spare laptop around the house deserted by Son for Macs, so plenty of computers to install VIRB Edit on if it doesn't like a particular Graphic card or version of Windows.

Reinstalled Mapsource as when I did a flight with the VIRB the second part of the GPX file vanished or wasn't recorded. So as a Zumo 220 happened to be on board at the same time, managed to save the GDB track as a GPX and copy it into the Video VIRB directory and use that.

Adjusted and checked, all well when viewed in VIRB Edit but now won't export the files, shame as the instruments were added on the new version and want to upload it onto YouTube. At first got to 500-700 Mb then crashed with an error message 'Unfortunately... had stopped'

Now dumps out of VIRB Edit every time, tried copying all the files onto the right directories on the VIRB itself and reimporting, lots of other tricks but no luck.

Reinstalled, then uninstalled, and reinstalled, is that what's wiping the Mapsource files?

Wiped the video files on camera and VIRB Edit stays up, keeps shouting about distance issues with the VIRB when connected so it is the files on the camera causing the issues, although 2.2.5.0 isn't sensitive to them. Wiped them too.

I'm used to Garmin software being less slick than the superb hardware so will persevere, my Zumo takes a while to be recognised sometimes. At present a stroke of luck meant 2.2.5.0 was still hadn't been updated on Son's laptop, so parked the files on that and now have got to 61% exported, so once complete will copy back onto main pc for YouTube upload, or save and use YouTube's own upload route.

Ironic that a stock Bridge Compact Cam connects to anything, perhaps before adding whizzy new features such as instruments the VIRB or software base chassis needs a looking at?

Took the VIRB to the office, my high end specially built CAD computer with twin cards struggles to connect at all, but a stock Dell saw it, and the tiny Toshiba Laptop is now the only PC that will process my video and GPX files and export them. Downloaded Garmin USB drivers on each in the hope of improving connection reliability. No luck.

Camera is fabulous, the idea of adding track and instruments/map even better, software virtually none-functioning. I lost a lovely flight above clouds by switching on via the app on my Android 'phone, but the big switch works every time.

    Kev A UK

Sandisk 32Gb cards are either not fully perfect or the VIRB is oversensitive to any flaws in them, I've bought two from completely different sources separately and each is a little tricky to read and format.

no problems installing 2.3.1 here, MS and BC still work as intended.
    Win7 x64 Pro
  • FALAGAR,

    Love the editable gauges!
Could use a few more arc radii for gauges to stack the on the side. Also the ability to flip some to the left vs the right.

    I recorded a 1:20:xx video on 1/16. Edited: http://youtu.be/Pr3tN5qEbaY

1a. It was 10.1GB across 3 video files. When I ran it through Virb Edit, added gauges, and export... shrunk it to 1.7 GB.

2b. The Track gauge. Somehow, it was glitchy as I clicked around switched from showing full ride to just the video segment. I got it to show the track for the entire segment and it exported entirely.

    Today. Did another ride. 1:17:xx

1a. Export is 9.85GB. Waiting on my slow pc to export now, got the 4GB warning. Hopefully it comes out under 1.7GB like above. However; if you changed something quality wise, it may vomit at 4GB? This would be sad due to how long it takes. It would be nice to have a quality choice... Some of us are less picky than others. The previous quality was great to me *shrug*, but definitely need high quality option still.

2b. Track. I can't get it to show all 3 merged entire Track. It's only showing clipped down track for each of the 3 video segments. =(

I synced my Garmin 500 to connect.garmin.com, exported the gpx file. Deleted Virb data, and imported Garmin500 to Virb Edit.

3a. It also broke up the Track map, instead of full map, segments for each of 3 video segments. :(

    3b. Temp gauges didn't work. :(
  • Errored during export.
Trying each segment separately. Hope it doesn't take 4+ hrs per segment... uggggh.
  • Another error, apparently can't export at all with 2.3.1

    Revertting to 2.2.5 :(
  • Just for information, Virb edit 2.3 for Mac doesn't have the issues reported about Virb Edit 2.3.1 for Windows: no 4 GB limit, no problems in exporting (did a 18 GB movie with a nice custom dashboard without any problem), the entire track is shown on the screen even if the movie is made by different segments. And the GUI is (much) nicer. I have both Windows and Mac versions installed.
In short, if you want to fix all your issues, just switch to Mac. I am joking :-)

    FALAGAR,

I've rotated one of the gauges. To complete a circle.
You can find the example video here https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?69546-Creating-custom-overlay-on-mac&p=245541#post245541
In the next post you can find the custom overlay.
In Win7 you need to go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\VIRB Edit"
Copy the files from 26_AVIA6 to this directory, (Template into Template, Widgets into Widgets and so on).
Here you find some more custom overlays, with mirrored speedometer.

BEWARE IN AN UPDATE THE TEMPLATES AND WIDGETS DIRECTORY WILL BE DELETED AND REPLACED WITH THE ORIGINAL TEMPLATES/WIDGETS ONLY.

The overlays made with 2.3.1 are placed in "C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit\Database\2\Templates" but I've not found a place where used defined gauges can be placed.

    @FALAGAR
Maybe in a new version you can make a place to safely store custom templates AND widgets.
