Two days editing a video - went to export, crashed and now saying moved or deleted

I am trying to be patient with this, I really am. Given the issues I have waited for a few months since buying the camera to edit anything other than test clips.
I edited a series of clips into a video using windows 7 on an I5 intel machine. edited ok, added music, played the 20min final cut a few times through Virb edit. All looked good. Slightly wary after previous attempts with the earlier edit versions I went to export to file.

it sat for a while doing nothing, thought it must be thinking about it before the progress bar would start moving.

Instead it came up virb edit has stopped functioning and will close.

re-booted the machine afterwards just in case. Now when I open edit it shows the video in the list, open it to edit and all the clips and music are on the bar but when the complete video or individual clips are clicked it says this file has been deleted or moved.

The originals are still there and play but I have wasted 2 days doing this and cannot face it again or have the time.

So much promise, but so much disappointment with this camera.

As I'm puzzling along I've found out the following:

VIRB Edit saves the movie-to-be in MovieProjects.
    The MP3's are stored in
    C:\Users\peter\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit\Database\2\MovieProjects\{some number}\MP3
The thumbnails are the tumbnails of the clips used.
In "edited_movie.xml" (opened on the left) you can find the direcory of the clip used.
In my case "<RawMovieId>88bb1693-621d-4c8e-8f8b-a4a3cf37ed48</RawMovieId>" corresponds with the clip-inmormation in C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit\Database\2\RawMovies\88bb1693-621d-4c8e-8f8b-a4a3cf37ed48.
In this directory there is a "video.xml".
If you open this you can read the clip location.
    In my case:
    <VideoFullPath>D:\Mijn Documenten\R100CS\RoadHawk Ride aanschaf\test\20131220\1920x1080-30fpsVIRB.mp4</VideoFullPath>

I hope this is usefull to you in recovering your data.

try to look for direcories mentioned in:
    <RawMovieId>58f547b2-7fa6-4a05-9043-873dbabfedb3</RawMovieId> (taken form your file)
    it will be \RawMovies\58f547b2-7fa6-4a05-9043-873dbabfedb3
    in there open the "video.xml"
    and look for the line:
    <VideoFullPath>{path of the clip.mp4}</VideoFullPath>
look if your clip is still in the mentioned path

    Right, got somewhere.
So for others who are reading this.
When adding a clip to virb edit by downloading from the camera or folder a new library reference file is created in the rawmovies folder.
When a new project is started it creates a folder in projectmovies.

For some reason the last few clips in my project had the file path of the camera. No idea how this happened as had edited the clips without the camera connected. They are located in the same place as the other clips.

Anyway, I have recovered the project although two clips I edited the XML file for worked and two were rejected. I have added them back into the virb library but the original XML files had the text erased. Will re-edit in virb.

So, It will also mean if you move files between folders prior to exporting any projects will get lost. I will re-try and see if this was the reason the export failed. Hope it does not repeat.. Will confirm back.
Many thanks for the help, has saved me from the task of starting from scratch. Much appreciated.

NT8 - I am subscribed to your youtube channel - watched you waiting for your elite to arrive as I awaited my virb basic. I also have the tempe and the same hopes for these devices. You have given us a few laughs :-)

Hey thank You very much! I am having a lot of fun with this developing of the software. I am very anxious for 2.3 to come out! Just for the temp gauge! Just did a run last night @ -2*F The Virb elite hopefully performed flawlessly! That is outside its specs!

I live in the UK but went over to spain with the Virb and tempe. reached 6300ft and had a reading of -2.8C in the snow. So -2f is about -18C if ive worked it out correctly.

That is silly cold. Could you post a youtube summary on what kit you use to stay warm at that temperature? We were out all day and after a few hours we were cold. Also how you stop your visor from misting. Cheers Rob

For some reason the last few clips in my project had the file path of the camera. No idea how this happened as had edited the clips without the camera connected. They are located in the same place as the other clips.

One possible explanation might be the use of "Import other" vs. "Import All/Selection". The former does not copy the clips to your library. It just links the file. So you really don't want to "Import other" from your VIRB. You should copy the file first and then use "Import Other".

While I am explaining this, it's painfully obvious that this is not obvious at all. We'll think of something to try to either prevent the user from doing this, or come up with a better solution.

So after fixing the path, your export went well? I am still concerned it won't work because at some point you said you could play it back fine but couldn't export. If the paths were wrong playing the video back also should not have worked.

We are fixing a few more export bugs in 2.3 which is not too far out (mid-January hopefully).

I am sure it must have been something I did but don't recall using import from other. What I can't understand is how it let me edit and play the project when it thought 4 of about 10 clips were on the camera without this being connected. All the clips were together in the folder on the laptop though.

I haven't had chance to re edit the last few clips again yet but will retry the export then and update this thread. I am not holding out too much hope just yet as I am using a Samsung laptop, it is a decent machine but the graphics might cause a problem. This was a test run using clips taken over Christmas prior to trying to edit 3hrs worth of clips taken on a recent motorbike trip. The Christmas clips totalled 10 of about 1.3hrs which I have trimmed and split down to 20 mins. The bike trip I want to edit down from 3hrs to 10 mins. So there will be a lot of editing to both.

OK, I have now re-edited the clips I had to add back in. Checked the file locations in the xml files are correct.

Tried to export, first time the progress bar did not more and after 5 mins I got an error saying Virb edit has stopped and will close.

Project length 19mins with sound and music, 56 clips made from cuttings of 10 original clips.

The second time I tried I got an error message from Virb Edit saying an error had occurred. The third time I tried it asked me if I wanted to overwrite the existing file which shows it made some attempt to create the export file.

This is as far as it got before an error again.

    Samsung laptop Intel i5 CPU M480 @ 2.67Ghz / 6GB RAM / 64 bit Operating system Windows 7 / service pack 1
    Display adapter NVIDIA GeForce 315M

Thanks for getting back to us.

Unfortunately, about all I can say for now is to wait for 2.3 (before the end of January). We've made some changes, and also do a lot more logging, so if it still fails we should be able to grab a log file that will hopefully tell us a bit more about what's going on.

    I apologize for the trouble.
