VIRB gpx import from other Garmin devices

Hi guys,

This is my first post here but I have been a Garmin user for quite a few years and I am now looking at buying a VIRB camera. I have not decided between the VIRB and the VIRB elite I had a look on the forums as well as Garmin's website but I couldn't find the exact answers I was looking for.

As far as I understood the only difference between the two is the GPS sensor, the accelerometer and the WiFi connectivity. Here are my questions:

1. Since I will be using the camera with my EDGE 500 or 62st I was wondering if it will be possible to overlay the GPS data from these devices to the video in the VIRB editing program?

2. Furthermore can I get the .fit file to overlay the video, including the temperature data from my EDGE 500 or I'll have to convert it to .gpx? If so, will I still get the temp data on?

3. Is there a remote control option for the 62st?

4. From what I read on here, they are working on a map or course overlay for the future updates, but is that going to be possible in case the imported GPS data is from my other two Garmin devices (if it's possible)

All the best,
Kris
  • Is the edge 500 at all compatible with the Virb?

Changes made from version 4.90 to 5.00: Added support for VIRB Remote (62s, 62st, 78s, 78sc models).

First VIRB Edit 2.2 will support temperature, but I don`t know, if fit is supported by virb edit.

    Hi Kris,

At the moment I'm using my RoadHawk Ride to record video and my Zumo550 to record a track.

For VIRB-Edit you need to connect your VIRB/Elite to retieve video AND GPS data at the same time.
Alternatively you can import video and GPS data seperately.
The video must be .MP4 so anything else needs to be converted.
The GPS data must be .GPX or .FIT so your .FIT file should be OK (can't test .FIT).
I get the .GPS data from my Zumo550 with MapSource as it doesn't remember all the things I've done before.
The GPS data is exported as .GPX as MapSource has no option to save it as .FIT .
The GPS data of my Zumo only contains time and hight.
Time is used to synchonise the video with the track.
The only thing that is displayed from the track in the movie is the hight, the speed is calculated from the track data.
They are working on adding other recorded data into the video.

    FALAGAR posted this:
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VIRB Edit 2.0 supports speed, elevation, heart-rate and cadence.
VIRB Edit 2.1 (to be released very soon) will add support for G-force and power (from the Vector).
VIRB Edit 2.2 will support temperature.
So right now, you should see heart-rate from your Fenix, but not temperature.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The map overlay maybe in release 2.3 as there are some legal issues.

You can download, install VIRB-Edit 2.1.1 and have a go, you don't need to have a VIRB.

Just saw that the Zumo390 now has a function to remotely controll the VIRB via ANT+ .

Using the VIRB Elite will make the process a lot more comfortable. You just connect the camera, import the videos and you automatically get the track imported and properly aligned. And if you just want to take a video you wouldn't need to worry about taking another GPS device.

    To answer your questions:

    1. Yes. But you will have to manually import the track and make sure it's aligned properly.
    2. Importing FIT should work. We use power, heart-rate etc. from the FIT file, but not yet temperature. It gets imported but not displayed. We plan to display temperature as well (but not yet in 2.2, that got pushed to 2.3).
    3. According to Volkte, looks like this works. (Not my area of expertise.)
    4. Yes. 2.2 will have a track outline and it doesn't matter where the track comes from (it does need time-stamps though).

Thanks a lot for the reponses guys. I appreciate it. I guess I'll go with the normal VIRB after I do so more research. It would be great if VIRB compatibility with EDGE 500 is in the works. In response to FALAGAR, I realize that VIRB Elite is the complete package but I don't need GPS sensor on every gadget as I will be recording mainly while using my other Garmin devices and of course there's the price difference :).

As for alignment of the imported track from another source with the video, is it too fiddly? I know that the Garmin GPS devices pick up the time from the satellite so does that mean that I just need to have the time on my VIRB calibrated to the time on my other Garmin GPS device that records the track? Will that ease the alignment of the data with the video? I hope that made some sense..

Thanks again for the replies, you're very helpful

Aligning should not be too bad. Making sure all the devices are set to the same time is definitely recommended, then no aligning should be necessary. If the times are not aligned, VIRB Edit also helps you by letting you pick a frame in the video and then a track point that matches that frame.

Is there any way to have the GPS start automatically when I start the Virb from my Fenix? This would make it alot simpler to sync my gpx files in virb edit.

Although I think starting the video and the track by pushing a button on your fenix could be done, but if Garmin will invest it's time to do it is an other question.
Like FALAGAR says aligning is not too difficult.
Besides if you make a long video and want to use only the parts you like, you also need to cut your track and re-align it manually.
An other option is to align the long video with the track, make a video with VIRB-Edit and re-edit it to only have the parts you like, this would probably take more time.

okay so once i got the time synced perfectly between the two devices the data overlay was exact. i know it would be easier to just do it with the Elite but no one has them in stock and i leave this week for a trip that i need the camera for.

is there any way to get the speed in metric and the elevation in ft? it only allows me full metric or standard.

simple answer: not jet, they're working on it.
So maybe when you get back from your trip it will be in the new release.

    FALAGAR said in another thread:
I'll put that on the list. We should be able to make this happen around the VIRB Edit 2.2 / 2.3 time-frame.

Yesterday my videos sync'd up. Today my gps and videos didnt sync for some reason even tho i had the clocks set. I was able to edit and adjust the gps data to the video.

When i export the video, the gps sync goes back to the original and the program doesnt export my edit. However when I review the video in the program the gps data is still sync'd as my edit.

Anyone know whats going on with this?
