Map in output (export) of VIRB?

After the Issue with the decimal devider was known, I managed to try things out.
The following things came to mind.
Is it possible to have the map to be included in the exported video?
Are there troggle switches for things to be includes/excluded in the video, like speed and hight?
Video without map:

Video with map:

As you can see the icons of the start, end, and current location are a bit big.
Besides when you zoom in, the red dot (current location) disappears from the visable part.
Is it possible to have the map auto-centered around the current location? (possible an on/off switch)

    Thank you for your feedback.

VIRB Edit 2.1 will definitely fix the decimal divider/display of track on map issue. It will be available soon.

We will provide more options for overlays and the capability to turn on or off different overlays in a later release.

Unfortunately we cannot export the map along with the video. Microsoft/Google would not be very happy about that. We looked into it, but it's not doable under the license we have.

Having the map auto-centered is something we will be looking at for 2.3.

You could use another map, like Openstreetmap... That is very doable, license-wise.

That is an excellent idea, I am a bit embarrassed I didn't think of it.

I checked their into API and it looks like it has everything we would need (which is really just drawing a track and markers, as well as controlling zoom level and position). We'd just have to make sure we can legally use it. But that's for the lawyers to figure out.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'd love to make that happen.
  • Openstreetmap doesn't have it's own API, but there are several frameworks you can use: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Develop/Frameworks#Webmaps
OpenLayers is a popular one, but my favourite is Leaflet: lightweight, fast and simple to use. Leaflet is also used by the openstreetmap.org website nowadays (previously OpenLayers).
Leaflet is distributed under the BSD license, which imposes minimal restrictions.
Besides the framework you need access to the map itself. Don't use the tiles from the Openstreetmap servers, but from another provider like Mapquest (ask your Connect-colleagues). Or better yet, get your own server...

Yeah, we are looking into Leaflet already. And we should be able to use whatever servers Connect is using.

The only remaining question is if it's OK to burn the map into a video. We'll investigate that.

Thanks again for all your input, it is much appreciated.

I think that would be OK, though the OpenStreetMap licence requires attribution.
So you should state somewhere in Virb Edit that maps are from OpenStreetMap.
And anyone publishing a video with a map should include credit in some way. It could be text in the video underneath the map, though that might not be readable at low resolution, or credits at the end of the video. Or maybe in the text description on Youtube etc.

What about using the maps that are available on the users system (if available)?
I'm using MapSource and Basecamp with NT2014.2, so that could be an option.

I think centering is only useful when only a part of the track is visable.

Not really. Garmin doesn't own the map data; it is licensed from companies like NAVTEQ.
  • Even if we can't get the full map, can we at least do what Sony is doing?

Yes, in 2.2 you will get the track outline. Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMM59pzjyjQ. It has a track on the top right, it's a bit boring though.
