VIRB Edit OBD 2 max speed issue

No, my bike revs out on about 240 km/h which is slightly above 147mph. I got more Problems with revs around 16.000. They drop inbetween.

But you can solve it by using the more precisely GPS speed instead of OBD II speed (Which sometimes is more then 10% away above 200).

What I cannot explain is why they maxed it

Sounds like you ran into the same problem as me. I really wish Garmin would really unlock this silly limit. There are cars/bikes that can legally go above 250 km/h... I feel like I wasted a whole 350 EUR at this point.

Well support have replied to me and I quote:

Unfortunately there is no way to bypass the restriction of the speed of 147 MPH being recorded by the camera. This is the maximum the camera software will allow to be recorded and that can be used by our editing software.

I guess this settles it, I'll have to return the camera and stick to a GoPro and do my own video + OBD2 data video editing. I still cannot understand why they decided to limit the max speed recorded or why it couldn't be fixed by a firmware update, it would've been the perfect camera setup I was looking for. What a shame.

Wait...  what???  I'm using this for track videos.  I'll definitely see higher speeds than that.  The video in the original post is gone.  What happens?  Does it just stay at 147 mph?  Does it blank out?

Are you sure you're seeing speeds higher than 255 km/h (~158 MPH) because that's where mine is stuck recording. 

No...  I haven't reviewed any video at those speeds yet.  I got my camera this past Saturday and have only put together one video from the footage I took and didn't reach those speeds.

Thanks for reposting the video though!!  I'm actually feeling a lot better now.  You mentioned above that the limit was 147 mph, which would be just over 236 km/h.  I go over that easily and this would have been a problem.

Seeing your video and that the actual cap is 255 km/h, it's much less of an issue.  The top speeds I'm likely to hit are around 260 if I'm going balls-out for top speed but I think a good lap probably has a top speed of around 250 to 255 so if the camera doesn't pick up speeds a hair above that it's not going to be an issue.

Of course, when I visit other race tracks with higher speeds I'm going to be annoyed.

What a stupid limit.  Don't they have a version of this that's specifically for airplanes or something?  Wouldn't this be an even bigger issue for those?

I think the GPS speed recording is not capped, just the car's speed done through OBD II. It is an absolutely stupid limit with no reason to be there but oh well.

I'll need to play with what I got last weekend to see whether the GPS speed seems reliable.  I've got issues with the lap times and the position dot seems to jump around the track map a fair bit so I'm assuming my GPS data isn't very good.

I had it mounted at the top of the rear windshield so I'd expect it's "view" of the sky would be as good as it can be so I'm not sure what's up with what I've seen so far.

It is related to the OBD2 specification.

It is only one byte of data, so it cannot be greater then 255.
My very own OBD2 adapter is capable of reading a two byte value from my motorbikes. But after converting them to OBD2 standard, they will max out!
