Just updated to virb edit 5.1.0 and tried to edit a 360 video. Virb edit crashes immediately when trying to create a video or do a playpack. Gives error VIRM edit has stopped working. Event log has this after crash.

    I have the same problem.

Was working with a video shot with a Virb XE yesterday and it was working fine when Virb Edit (4.2.3) froze and crashed.
Restarted the program and got a notifiaction there was an update avilable wich I installed.
Database was upgraded during install and everything looked fine until I tried to playback the video I was working on.
The playback window comes up but all black and then Virb Edit crashes and shuts down.
Have tried with several videos with the same result. Only video that works is a timelapse video.
Have also tried changing encoders and decoders but with the same result. Virb Edit crashes but in different ways.

In the changelog for 5.1.0 it says "Improved hardware support for encoding and decoding". I'm not so sure about that. It worked before, slowly but it worked.

    Edit:
Windows 10 1703 with an Intel Core i7 6700K, 32GB DDR4 and a ASUS Geforce 1080Ti graphics card with latest drivers.

You can uninstall 5.1 and reinstall 4.2.3 or 3.6 if you want to.

I have the exact same problem here, same error in the event log and using an Nvidia GTX 1080.

As to the suggestion on installing an older version, where can I find downloads of older versions?

I'm assuming you are using a Virb 360 and not some other camera like a Rico Theta or something. Did your videos import successfully from your camera into VirbEdit?

    Everyone else:
Were your crashes / failures connected to projects created in prior versions of VirbEdit or were they new videos you created after upgrading to 5.1? Did the problems you observed occur with 2D or 360 videos? We want to get these issues figured out and fixed as soon as possible. Sorry for the rocky launch, and thank your for your help!

Hi Purdington and thanks for looking into this.

I am using a Virb XE filming in 1080p60. All my videos are imported in previous versions of Virb Edit but that is a simple copy-file-and-add-to-database-operation right?
Nothing is reencoded when importing from cam to Virb Edit?

The program crashes whenever trying to playback any video, edited or just imported from the cam it doesn't matter.

Made a backup of my database, unistalled Virb Edit and removed all files manually under C:\Users\MyUser\AppData\Local\Garmin and C:\Users\MyUser\AppData\Roaming\Garmin.
Reinstalled Virb Edit 5.1.0 and imported my database but program still crashes.

Have tried all the different enocders and decoders but with the same result.

Have tried with a videofile recorded on a different cam but also with the same result.

    I'm using the VIRB XE.

The problem occurs whenever I open or play a video, whether it is an imported media clip or a previously created project. Same result if I create a new project, and drag a media clip in there, as soon as it is about to display the video frame in the preview window it crashes.

I tried deleting the old database from disk and reinstalling, then importing a single video clip from disk (an mp4 previously imported from the camera), but as soon as I double click the media clip to open it, it briefly opens, sometimes appears to show a single frame of the video before crashing.

All of my videos are normal 2D-videos, so no 360 or anything like that here.

As someone else mentioned, I tried all three rendering modes under options without any changes, same behavior no matter what I select.

    Edit:

I actually tried to rollback the NVidia drivers as well, since I remember them being updated the other day. This unfortunately did not help the problem either apparently. So updated them again to version 381.65, with the problem still persisting of course.

+1 on everything here. Also tried with a mp4 recorded on a different device but with the same result.

No, we do not re encode, but VirbEdit 5.1 got a database version bump since we need lots of new metadata data, which involves some non trivial migration operations. I was curious to see if some of these issues were related to our database migration code (data we need / expect not being set for example). Based on what I've heard here, it seems like these crashes occur even you have a fresh database and videos are imported into the new version (as opposed to being ported in from 4.2.3).
  • My Edit crashes while importing. But I actually cannot tell exactly when.
The G-Metrix was imported 100%, then it broke down after 2/8 videos. The (unnecessary) clip optimization was at 1 or 2%.
Next attempt: 3/6 clips, 1% optimization => crash
    1/2, 2% => crash
Every last video during the crash was not playable and had to be reimported.

Playback from "old" and new imported videos is working.

    Virb XE 1080p 30fps

    [EDIT]
G-Metrix are not working: One static value per clip, only. F.e. the starting speed is shown the whole time until the next clip starts.
Screencapture does noting, either. No overlay-message where the picture is located and named. Also it cannot be found in the expected folder.
