Is it possible to cut/ split raw data (Video + GMetrix)?

Hello everyone!

I went on a road trip through the alps last weekend and used my VIRB Ultra 30 to capture some of the driving (especially on curvy roads). Unfortunately I forgot to stop recording once when I took a 15min break on the top of a mountain, which is why I now have footage of my car standing in the middle of nowhere doing nothing. The question now is:

Is there any way to remove those 15min of boredom from the raw material (Video + GMetrix data)?

If it was just the mp4-file I'd use LosslessCut, but my fear is that I'm going to run into issues then as soon as I want to add a GMetrix overlay to the shortened video in VIRB Edit...

I hope you can help me!

Cheers,

Daniel

PS: The reason I want to do this is I'm keeping all the raw material on an external hard drive and don't want to waste any space
  • Hi Daniel,

I´m not sure what happens if you only cut the video, but not the G-Metrix. It should work* .
But what I do know: If you cut the recording in Virb Edit and export it, the cut G-Metrix will be exported also (into the same folder).
Using that file and G-Metrix combined with your other raw material, will create a gap in your data.
F.e. the total kilometers will start from zero. Virb Edit detect that there is a small gap in the data and thinks you have started a new recording.

*Using the "Auto. recording"-feature, the Virb goes on recording the G-Metrix, but stop recording the video.
In Virb Edit, your total time, kilometer or altitude will be combined.
That´s why I expect it will work. It´s important that the starting time is equal in both files (video & gmetrix).

Doing processing outside VirbEdit is always a little risky because the files the camera produces have metadata that tell it when/where to sync up with the GMetrix file. If you create a new file with another app, it will not preserve that information. Your GMetrix data often both starts before, and ends after, your video. Even when you are not recording, the camera is still gathering data, so a lot of times the start of your video is not the same as the start of the GMetrix file.

That said, VirbEdit does support manually adding GMetrix to a video and manually syncing the two, so there's no reason you cannot do what you want to, it will just be a bit more work.
You can manually add GMetrix to your file by going to the GMetrix tab -> Data ->Import GMetrix... You can check the previous imports list to see if your video's data is in there (hopefully it is), and if not, you can pick the file manually in the "On my computer" tab. .fit files are named by date, but even knowing that, it can be a bit tedious to find the right one.
