Next VIRB Edit

When will the next version of VIRB Edit be released?

3.6 works for me; 4.2.3 does not. I am ready for 4.3 or 5.0

I know this is not the answer everyone wants to hear, but we cannot pre-announce VirbEdit releases. Let me just assure everyone that we do have a specific release date toward which our team is working, and a huge amount of effort is going into making sure it is the best it can possibly be. There are a lot of very cool new features everyone is going to love, and some very nice improvements on existing ones as well. We're all very excited to get the latest software into your hands

Well I hope the new version is out in time with my PC being fixed .......getting a lot of videos stored up and nothing to process them on!

If 4.2.3 doesn't work for you, search for and download 3.6.
  • multiple exports?

I'm sure someone has to have asked for this in the past, and it would require a machine with a great amount of resources, but is there a chance the new version will allow you to work on one file, while another one that you've finished editing is exporting in the background? I have a pretty strong machine so when I'm done editing and exporting a video, I'm only using about 70-80% CPU, and I figure while that is doing it's exporting I could start working on the next file.

@DickyDck, you can actually do that now if you want to.
    Short version
Start exporting your video the normal way, wait for progress bar to move, cancel export
Open command line and type these commands:
    cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\VIRB Edit"
    VirbExport.exe "C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Temp\Garmin\Virb\export_settings.xml" #Make sure you substitute the appropriate thing for <your username>

    Longer explanation
Video export is actually done in a separate application from VirbEdit called "VirbExport." Normally, VirbEdit launches it for you when you export a file, but this app can be launched manually from the command line. To successfully run an export, you have to tell VirbExport where your export settings file is. VirbEdit creates this file at C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Temp\Garmin\Virb\export_settings.xml immediately prior to launching VirbExport. So all you need to do is start the export then cancel it once VirbExport actually starts and the file should have everything you need in it. When I do this ( and I do it all the time to test exporting), I usually wait to see the progress bar move so I know export has actually started. A few random things to consider:
    1. VirbExport and VirbEdit both use a LOT of video card memory and RAM. If you don't have more than 2GB of video RAM and 8GB system RAM or more, and you use both VirbEdit and export in the background, you are likely to see failures in both applications.
    2. Video processing pushes even the best machines to their limits. Doing both editing and exporting at the same time may make exporting much slower and result choppy playback in VirbEdit
    3. Running from the command line has its disadvantages, mostly in the realm of user feedback. You don't get to see progress or know when it is done other than to notice when the process goes away. If there is an error, you don't get to know that either except to notice that your video didn't get created.
  • Thanks! I will give it a try but based on your description the pitfalls outweigh the perks. I have a pretty beefy machine, I7-6800k (12-core 3.4ghz) , 8GB R9 video card, and 32 GB of RAM. but even when exporting a single video through VIRB Edit, it takes 75% of all cores. So running 2 would probably end badly for video quality. Surprisingly it doesn't use a lot of my RAM though.
  • Since we all still waiting for the next super-duper release, I would like to suggest some tweaks and improvements, hopefully this are small enough to be included, although they feel important to me.

    1) Allow apply G-metrix to all videos
When you import multiple videos to timeline and want to import a G-Metrix (for example the FIT file from my edge 1000), you have to go thru all video segments to change the G-metrix source. Could you add a option to "Apply to all videos in the timeline" when importing G-metrix?
-Bonus points if we could be allowed to chose witch videos currently on library we would like to apply the G-metrix to

    2) Adding Audio
Would it be possible to cut the audio? Some times when we import audio files, they contain some silence in the beginning or at the end of the song, or we just plain and simple just want a small portion of a full song, allowing some "cutting" would be super cool.
-Bonus points if we could some overlapping over songs so they swap from one to the other since and soft, just like spotify does

    3) Export All the things!
Rendering (exporting) takes a long time, does not matter if we have a quad-cpu with 20cores each and 1Tb ram and 4xGTX, it does take time. Would be super cool to edit all the videos we want to export, and on the library screen, have an option to EXPORT all the videos, in sequence one by one, and in the end, have the option to SHUTDOWN the computer.
-double points if we would be allowed to choose witch videos we would like to be exported first and in what order
-triple points if we would be allowed to select witch videos we would like to export and witch we would like to ignore

    4) shutdown your computer, because saving energy matters
Even on a single video export, having the option to shutdown computer at the end of the job would rock. The planet and the trees thank you.

    5) Video name while exporting
When we export a video, the screen shows:
    VIRB EDIT at the top
EXPORT VIDEO TO MP4 in the center above the progress bar
CANCEL right bellow the progress bar
    but
anywhere it say WITCH video is exporting, video name, output destination information would be greatly appreciated

    6) Batch editing
Sometimes my Virb XE camera gets confused, upset or just drunk, I really dont know, but most of the times the video orientation is just right, and sometimes, it's plain up side down. Since I usually record full bike rides that take from 2 to 10+ hours, you can imagine I have alot of video segments to edit and flip 180. up side down. Having (again!) a option to "APPLY TO ALL THE VIDEOS ON TIMELINE" would be greatly appreciated.
-Bonus points if we would be allowed to choose videos from the library to apply this, saving tons of clicking and time

    7) Videos optimization on import
This as been beating to death by now, but can you please listed to your customers and just add an option to allow to disable this thing? Most of us plain and simply do not want it, we have alot better things to do than wait for the computer to waste our time optimizing something not worth optimizing. Others may actually want this to happen, so, a simple switch on the options would make everyone happy and send you boxes and boxes of chocolate filled with "thank you" and kudos

    8) GPU rendering support
I been reading about this and it's just not easy to understand IF virb edit uses GPU for rendering, if any of the encoders uses GPU and if so, witch one. Can you please add some sort of description when we select the encoder to be crystal clear if GPU will be used or not when we select a encoder? or a plain switch "USE GPU ON/OFF"?

    9) CPU priority
Yes, it may sound ridiculous but some people actually would like to use their computers for OTHER tasks while Virb edit chews our videos into nice MP4 files. Would be really nice to have a option (by default: NORMAL) that would allow us to say "lower task priority on CPU" allowing other programs run "normally" even when Virb is trying to convert our CPU into a meat griller.

I dont think I forgot anything.. Ill update if so.

    Thank you, and please,

I would love a batch edit / process feature. All of my videos are 2ish minutes long (skiing) but at the end of the day I have a larger number of them. I would love to be able to be able to create a batch file that added my default overlay to all of them with out having to open and edit and expert each one, one at a time. if I could just dump them in to a folder and hit go and come back a few hours later and have them done it would be a huge time saver. as it is right now I really only edit the ones I really like because its just too much of a hassle.
