Combine Data from Virb Ultra 30 and Edge 1000

Hi,

I have just purchased a Virb Ultra 30 and have had my Edge 1000 for a long time. I have multiple ANT+ / bluetooth sensors on the bike I ride, speed, cadence and HR.

I want to put a video together which shows the entire circuit as an overlay but then has my position shown on it at the various stages of the ride.

I tried to do this by recording my ride as normal on the Edge and then using the data from this but then the other data seems to be miles out, I tried to do this by recording the ride on the Virb but if you switch off and on inbetween clips the circuit is broken into pieces.

So I want to use the Virb for everything and overlay the circuit with data from the Edge, is this possible?

Thanks in advance

This is completely stupid, I have the same setup, Edge 1000 and Virb Ultra. Before I used a Shimano Cam and edited my videos in Dashware, using the data from the Edge 1000, this worked fine, apart form the manual sync I had to do, but now it is not possible to see how far I have ridden, no matter if I use the distance from the Edge og the Ultra, this is not ok, why is it not possible to use the distance from the Edge, and show the distance from the Edge was started?

Apart from that, I am surprised to see that I have to manually sync the Edge's data with the movies from Virb, I would have expected that both units having a GPS, they would be synced automatically :-(

All in all, I am a bit dissapointed about my new Virb :-(
  • I did actually work this out.

If you switch the VIRB on and make sure it had a GPS location before you start recording, then import all the video clips as normal in virb edit. Once you have them import the edge data and ensure each clip is using the edge for distance and location.

After that go to 'set activity start time' and you'll see it's adjusted it forward to the first clip which is wrong, so just move the slider to 0:00:00.

That worked really well for me.

If you record clips by starting before it's got a GPS signal you'll have to manually align.

Im relieved that someone has worked this out. Like you I want to use my virb 30 and edge 1000 in tandem. I want to turn the virb on and off to record clips and combine data data from each device. Does your solution require leaving the virb on throughout the ride or do you do you turn on for each clip! How do you ensure each clip is using the edge data for distance and location? And how do you "set activity start time" and where is the slider that shoes the time has been zerod? Many thanks if you can reply as like you I find this problem is very frustrating. It's pity Garmin didn't provide a solution

Everytime you turn the camera on it takes a few seconds to a few minutes (depends if there are clouds in the sky, obstructions, etc..) to get a GPS lock. If you don't have a solid GPS lock (GPS icon on camera display will be solid/not blinking when you have a lock) and you start a recording your time stamp/location data will most likely not be correct.

If you insist on turning the VIRB on and off to record then you may want to wait for a GPS lock after turning on the camera before you start a recording (GPS icon on display will stop blinking)

    1. How do you ensure each clip is using the edge data for distance and location?
Create a video in VIRB Edit, add the clip to the timeline, then access the G-Metrix > Data Tab.
Select the "Import G-Metrix" button and import your Edge fit file.
On the G-Metrix >Data tab find the data you want to use from the Edge fit file then using the drop down select the Edge's fit file. The video will now use the Data for that specific data type from your Edge fit file and not the VIRB.

    2. And how do you "set activity start time" and where is the slider that shoes the time has been zerod?
G-Metrix > Data > Activity Start Time button; the slider is on the screen that displays after pressing the button

Thank you very much. I think have 2 options.

Firstly, If I want to use overlay data from my Virb 30 and conserve battery between recording clips I can switch the remote to on so the camera goes in to standby on turning off thereby saving battery in low power mode. It seems to very quickly lock to gps on turning on to record.

Secondly, I can rely entirely on my edge 1000 (which stays on throughout my bike ride) for overlay data. So turn off Virb sensors, Bluetooth, wi-fi and remote to save battery and have the camera completely off between recordings. The camera turns on and records within a few seconds and data from the edge is imported later to Virb Edit and I proceed as per your advice above.

One problem with the last option (and maybe the first) is that if I want the distance overlay on when creating a video, each clip in the timeline starts with the distance at zero. What I hoped was that as the Garmin data covers the whole route the Virb Edit would know how far in to the route each clip was recorded and show that in the video overlay. So if I record at say one mile, 10 miles and 25 miles these distances would show in the overlays on the respective clips. Does any one have a solution please?

Easy, exactly as the instructions are above but then on each clip ensure that "distance" field in the data section is coming from the Edge and not the Virb, that will do what you want it to as I've done it myself!!

If you look at this video I have used a combination of data from the Virb and Edge, the data from the Edge is distance and position, which then allows you to have distance shown for the entire ride and also use the overlay of the track data.

  • Nice video clip! How were you able to combine virb and edge gmetrics? When I try to subtitute the data from virb with garmin fenix it substitutes everything, I can nit select to use only i.e. Distance from Fenix since everything is then switched to fenix fit file. I don’t get it
