Combine Data from Virb Ultra 30 and Edge 1000

In theory, yes.

You should be able to import the VIRB's data just as usual. Then add the Edge's data.

In the G-Metrix data tab you have dropdowns for all the different data types where you can pick which source (VIRB or Edge) you want to use.

The only caveat is that you want to make sure the timestamps are consistent (but they should be because both VIRB and Edge use GPS).

It works but not very well.

I recorded the entire ride on my Edge as normal, then with the Virb I recorded various clips along the way, switching the camera off in-between clips to save the battery.

The finished ride and in Virb Edit it now has the overlay of the entire route and then shows with a 'track' overlay the position along the way, which is exactly what I want.

The problem now is the video does not match the overlay data, so the bike comes to a stop and the speed overlay still shows as 15mph, so it's completely out of sync. Also if I use the Virb for distance it resets each time so you don't get the distance of the whole ride, just the clip it's currently showing. I can manually fix this by doing the g-metrix sync but this takes time and is one of the main reasons for buying the Virb as it should remove the need to manually do these things with it's built in GPS.

I have tried a lot of different options, using the Virb data for the entire ride and only using the Edge data for the first and last section (to get the entire route in the display). I've also tried different options on which data to use for which fields, a combination of 'virb 30' and 'edge 1000' but none seem to work very well.

Really struggling with this and would love to find a solution.

The recommend way would be to keep the VIRB running the entire session, I can see things getting complicated if it's different sessions.

For starters, did you get it to work when you kept the VIRB running for entire ride? That would at least give us a base-line.

For the other scenarios, we might have to do some tweaking to make this a bit less painful. Do you think you could share some of your data for us to look at?

Yes the answer would be to use the Virb and leave it switched on for the entire ride, then use the data just from this, however the battery only lasts around an hour or so. To get around this I bought a spare battery thinking I could switch the battery half way through the ride, however this doesn't work as the second half starts the recording of data from 0 again.

Ideally I would switch the Virb on, leave it on during a full ride (3-4 hours) and only record the highlights which would be 3-4 minute clips along the way with a total video of 30 minutes or so, but as I said the battery just doesn't last that long.

This was the whole reason I bought the Virb Ultra 30 and sold my GoPro 4 Hero Silver, so I didn't have to manually align the data overlay to the video!!

I can provide data / video clips if you can investigate?

2 Separate 'rides' recorded this morning.

First one with the VIRB and EDGE switched on throughout the whole ride. Second one with the EDGE on throughout the whole ride and the VIRB switched on and off inbetween the 3 clips.

First video in Virb Edit is perfect using only the Virb data, second one needs manual alignment which is what I am trying to avoid.

Both devices using GPS to acquire date and time and are perfectly synchronised.

Still no answer??

Works fine if I leave the camera on and record clips, impossible to do with a short battery life!!

Have you tried the Virb with an external battery pack?

This should be the easy option, however, out and about riding (MTB for me), encountering branches / stones & weather such as rain etc don't work with Garmin's waterproof case as you can't route a cable. As for the open 'cage', well, that's leaving it open to disaster again.

I think for the price, I will buy a second waterproof case and butcher it so the cable ports are accessible while giving as much protection as possible.

Completely defeats the object of what I am trying to do, I have 2 Garmin devices which should be able to overlay the data from each and they should be in sync, however it doesn't work.

As the other poster has said the battery pack won't work with a waterproof case either!
