Measured vs Calculated Speed VIRB Ultra

Used my new VIRB ultra at a karting event and wanted to use a speed field overlay in VIRB Edit.
However the measured speed seemed low - Max measured value was ~55mph.
If I compared that to the calculated speed the max value using the calculated speed data filed was ~70mph

Was wearing my Fenix 3 at the same time and that shows a max speed of 53.5mph so ties up with the measured value on the VIRB it seems.

How is the calculated speed different than the measured speed ?

And which one is more likely to be accurate ?

Thanks

    wondering as well

I've been wondering this too, on my dirt bike the speeds change dramatically due to the acceleration.

However I have no real answer for you but I was thinking it must be something like recorded speed is just whatever the gps data can poll on the spot, where as calculated speed would use a combination of the recorded instant speed, along with the distance and duration and work out the speeds more accurately with that. However like on a dirt bike your go kart around a track would be constantly up and down in speed and the calculation would be less accurate. Don't know but just food for thought. Be good if someone who actually knows or has tested this to some extent could shed some light?
  • Calculated speed calculates (in VIRB Edit) the speed from timestamp, latitude & longitude (2D) and from timestamp, latitude, longtitude & altitude (3D).

Measured speed is what the device tells us it thinks the speed is. VIRB Edit just displays what the device reports without any extra calculation (apart from interpolating between data points). As you saw, it looks like it's using a similar algorithm as other Garmin devices like the Fenix 3. To measure speed on the device it also calculates it from timestamps and location, but at a higher sampling rate. So in theory the measured speed from the device should be more accurate.

We give the user the option between different speeds because there have been cases when the measured speed didn't quite line up. Calculated speed should be fairly reliable as well as long as your GPS signal was strong (you have a very smooth track line with no jaggedness).
  • Thanks for the replies.
In my case I see a large difference between the measured and calculated speeds abuts repeatable pretty much every lap.
Will have to ask the circuit what they think top speed is to gauge which is the more accurate.

    Thanks

    Dear Falagar!

The distance in Virb Edit also is a calculated value, isn't it? In a 30-40 km long drive the distance in the exported .fit and in the virb edig gauge is different with about 2-3 km-s.... So confusing :(

    Thanks
