You can download it at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6591, the in-application update is live as well.

This is a minor feature release with a few quality-of-life updates and a bunch of bug fixes.

  • G-Metrix: Added jump detection for mountain biking and wakeboarding
  • Added DXVA decoder option (optimized for PCs without a dedicated graphics card, like most laptops)
  • Added VIRB Ultra logos
  • VIRB Edit will now attempt to default to the correct unit settings (e.g. metric vs. statute)
  • Updated settings page to make tabbed interface more apparent
  • Moved 'Export transparent PNG sequence for overlays' checkbox to export page (from settings)
  • Fixed Multi-Cam when doing 'Import Other' (as opposed to importing from a VIRB directly)
  • Fixed gauge and template downloads
  • Fixed order when dragging several photos from a time-lapse onto the time-line
  • Fixed G-Metrix display for uploads onto Garmin Connect when a bumper video was added
  • Fixed several translations and cut-off strings
  • Fixed incompatibility with FIPS that could lead to crashes
  • Added warning when VIRB Edit detects incompatible 3rd party apps (AMD's PlaysTV)
  • Fixed various other issues
  • Considering how bad 4.1.1 was - I'll wait a while and monitor the forum before installing. I no longer need that much adventure in my life.
  • I´ve installed it and it works without a flaw (until now).

But I must say, I didn´t have had so many problems with 4.1. Sure, Gmetrix where gone at first. Then it crashes several times, when returning to the gallery. That, somehow cures itself after some restarts.
After updating to 4.2.1 everything stayed fine :)

But what´s still inconceivable annoying: The automatic "Optimization"! To reduce a 1080p recording to 720p does nothing, except bloating the harddisk. You can ignore the question if the existing recordings should be "optimized". But skipping that during the import is not possible. You will have to wait until the last video was imported, then you can select "optimize later". Then there are still some videos optimized and you cannot click "remove imported clips" any more.

Things, which still don´t work, can be optimized or would be great features:
    • Add a clip, when a scrollbar appeared in the timeline, will be located somewhere
    • Adding/Cutting recordings or pictures should delay/move the added titles
    • Optimize displaying long names (Mouseover?)
    • Using different overlays in a single video. Or make combining some edits to a single export possible
    • YouTube optimization
    • Deleting a clip (or just parts) should ask for leaving the G-Metrix, for a complete map and the correct distance
    • Add an overall-distance gauge, which combines all gmetrix data, to avoid starting at zero on each clip
    • Enable audio cutting and locating several files
    • Title animation, to enable a credits-like transition

I´d immediate delete VSDC Video Editor and GoPro Studio then :)

Added DXVA decoder option (optimized for PCs without a dedicated graphics card, like most laptops)

Forgive me for putting in a shameless endorsement for my own pet project, but I wanted to highlight this feature because I think it has the potential to help a lot of our users. In testing with the laptops around the office, switching to the DXVA decoder took playback performance from struggling to play 1080 60fps to playing 4k videos at over 200 fps. Put another way, on many machines the DXVA decoder represents a 10x performance improvement. If you are having trouble with choppy playback, give this a try. I should also note that on PCs with dedicated graphics cards, performance is actually little worse with DXVA than other options, so its not a universally superior option.

You can give DXVA a spin by going to Menu->settings->media and choosing DXVA from the dropdown under "Video Decoder"
  • Image Capture Quality

There is an issue in 4.2.1 with image capture quality. I only use my cameras and the software to capture images so this is a massive inconvenience. Until the issue is resolved can someone tell me how to get back to version 3.6.0.2

You would need to uninstall VE 4.2.1 using the Programs & Features (Add/Remove Programs) in Win7. Then delete the directories:
    C:\Users\[User Profile Name]\Videos\VIRB
    C:\Users\[User Profile Name]\Pictures\VIRB
    C:\Users\[User Profile Name]\AppData\Roaming\Garmin
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin

After you manually deleted (or verified their deletion) can you install the VE 3.6.0.2 program.

  • Just be aware that removing C:\Users\[User Profile Name]\AppData\Roaming\Garmin will remove all GMetrix files and the data for any other Garmin program!

I think if you want to revert to an older version you'll need to not remove the AppData\Roaming\Garmin folder. If you imported any videos on version 4.x I doubt you'll be able to use the GMetrix once you downgrade. If you look in the folder C:\Users\[User Profile Name]\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Virb Edit\Database you'll see folders of numbers. Each time a major version is released it looks like the database is migrated to the next available number, so the older data is still available.

  • I know what to get rid of and how to install. I should have made my question clearer. Where can I get a copy of version 3.6.0? Which is what I was running before I auto upgraded. I have a copy of 2.8 which is what I started with originally and I am using that for now. As I had always auto upgraded I do not have standalone installers for any of the interim versions.

VIRB Edit 4.2.1 and Corrupt GPX data

I've been unsuccessful in correcting bad GPX data after switching to VE 4.2.1. See the link below for more info.
