Trim video but retain sensor data from entire activity?

I just bought a VIRB Ultra 30 last week and created my first videos over the weekend. I did a bike ride that was about an hour long and recorded the entire video. I started trimming the video in the VIRB Edit and noticed that it also trimmed the location map and distance. For example, I trimmed the first mile of the ride video, and it also trimmed the first mile from the map and the distance gauge starts at 0 when the recording starts instead of at 1.

Is it possible to trim sections of a video, but retain the sensor data from the entire original video so that gauges like the map, distance, elapsed time, etc. all appear on the video as their actual data and not the new data after the video was trimmed? I hope I'm saying that in a way that makes sense.

For example, most of my rides are between 1 and 4 hours long. Going forward I don't plan on recording the entire ride, I may only capture 10 minutes of footage total in small pieces throughout the ride. But it would be nice if I had sensor data from the entire ride so that the map gauge showed a complete loop instead of just small un-connected sections, and if I recorded a section that was say 40 miles into the ride, the distance gauge showed 40 miles even though I may not have actually started the video until mile 40.

So like I said, I'd like to be able to capture sensor data for the entire activity but only record small pieces of video footage throughout the activity. Does this make sense and is this possible?

First, if you used another fitness device at the same time, like a GPS bike computer or GPS watch, you can also select that as the Metrix source for your clips.

If you did not, note that the Ultra records metrics as soon as it's turned on. Every time you record a video, an equivalent portion of said file is copied to a new file for that clip, but that main file for that power cycle is kept and updated as long as the camera remains on.

You can use that main file as the data source when you edit the video. Add a clip to the timeline, then go to G-Metrix -> Import G-Metrix. It may already appear at the top of the list, with a star next to the file name. If not, select Browse, navigate to the SD card/Metrix folder and select the file with the date and time corresponding to when you turned on the camera. It should sync automatically with your footage.

insert dummy video to prevent trimming of data

I got the same thing that data gets trimmed together with video.
Video footage might not be interesting from the start onwards but it is important to retain total data of distance, track etc.

What I do is insert a dummy video (black) of about one second before the first trimmed video footage and manual sync that with the start of the trip, at the end the same thing.

When I am done with VIRB I futher process my video's in an external video program.

That´s a known habit.
Several People (like me) has mentioned that in a different thread, before.

When deleting clips, Edit should ask for keeping G-Metrix data. That would be the easiest thing.
Deleting parts from a single clip, it will work.
It always works, if you add the G-Metrix manually. But then you have to adjust it manually.

Sometimes you want it, sometimes you doesn´t. That´s why I prefer a confirmation.

I was just thinking about this again. So if I power the VIRB on at the beginning of a ride, but I don't actually start recording any video until about an hour into the ride, the VIRB will have recorded metrics for that entire first hour? The camera won't go into standby and stop recording metrics?

Same Issue as OP

Ran into same issue, I wanted to create 2 separate videos of the same 1 hour ride. and realized like you that after importing the second half videos and adding the G-metrix to them the Distance travel started counting from 0 instead of mile 8 on my case.

I think I was able to get the counter to count from 8 miles (distance travel) by assigning the activity start time. This is done via the G-Metrix menu section. Once the correct Start Time in relation to the G-metrix data, the G-Metrix data showed the correct information for the ride and second half of video currently exporting. but preview of the video before export did showed correct distance travel ans well as location on map.
