Virb edit, various problems, please help!

Hi all getting to the end of my tether with Virb edit, was running Win 7 sp1 with directx11 on my laptop (amd dual p320, 6GB Ram, Raedon HD 4250) and all that would happen is it would keep asking for me to update DX to 10 or higher (when I was running 11), updating to Win10 and giving to my IT friend has solved this issue. Now when I play the videos it is incredibly jerky/jumpy, oh well I thought suppose I can put up with this, but tried to export a very small clip 1min 30sec and every time it gets to around 40% then says there has been a problem and stops. I have tried the two different encoders on Virb and getting the exact same problem? I have updated my drivers, Virb Edit up to date etc. Thought my laptop may be on the weak side to run Virb edit, but runs Dashware/AVS video edit/Sony Vegas fine and they are way more complex than Virb edit. Really want to keep the camera but the editing software seems to be causing problems.

Here's hoping someone can help

I am very sorry about the trouble.

We might have fixed the export issue, try this build: http://static.garmin.com/desktop-chandler/virbedit/installers/Virb_3.4.1.0.exe.

Your laptop is on the weak side a little bit, but I hope with the fix you should at least be able to export. Make sure the laptop is plugged in to external power and isn't running in any sort of power-savings mode (that usually tunes down the graphics card performance).

You could also try putting both encoder and decoder settings to Media Foundation, that might speed things up.

Hi guys! In 3.4.1 exporting is finally fixed but Youtube sharing issue still persists.

That's great to hear. Our initial analytics are very promising, export failure rates are way down.

We'll look into YouTube sharing as well. But luckily there is a work-around, you can just export and then manually upload to YouTube via their web-site.

    Thanks for letting us know.
  • I'm interested to hear how you go with the YouTube quality issue. From what I've seen the export from Virb Edit is excellent quality, but YouTube re-encodes it to average-poor quality. It's very obvious around the gauges. From that I'd blame YouTube and not VE. Still, if there's something in VE that can make YT encode nicer that'd be great.

I've also had a quick look at 3.4.2 and it looks pretty good. The date issue is fixed which is great! I'm still getting the error on the Loading Clips screen saying that 6 clips are missing. I've checked all projects and clips and they all seem ok. I did get a few errors opening one video saying that some clips were missing even though they were in the default import folder. I had to manually 'find' them and all is good. That seems unrelated to the missing clips error though.

    Cheers,
    Brett

I am afraid there isn't much we can do about YouTube quality. But we've gotten reports about uploading not working at all. That's what we'd like to address.

About the missing clip, the two issues you describe are probably the same thing. So after you find them and re-start VIRB Edit do you still get the message? I would hope that once you've re-linked them all, you'd be good.
  • Thanks Falagar,

The errors appear independent of each other (or at least re-linking the videos mentioned in my previous post hasn't cleared the error on startup). I still get the 6 clips missing error every time I start Virb Edit.

    This is very curious.

To explain a little bit what might make VIRB Edit say that a video is missing:

    a) The file isn't there. It was renamed or deleted.
    b) The file is there, but we think it's not the same file that was originally imported.

Could you share one of the videos that goes missing, as well as your database with me via Dropbox, OneDrive, etc.? To get the database, zip up C:\Users\{YOUR USERNAME}\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\VIRB Edit\Database\4.

I'd like to see if the hash (what we use to determine if (b) applies) that's in the database is the same as the hash we generate for the video.

Ultimately, what I'd like to do is for a way for the user to say "Yes, this is the same file, stop bugging me about it".
  • Unfortunately it's not telling me what clips it thinks are missing. If the issue is 'a' then potentially I can go through each xml file and confirm the clip is present. If it's 'b' then that won't help. Do you know if there's a log somewhere that it records what clips it thinks is missing? If not do you still want the database?

From memory this occurred straight after upgrading to 3.4.0. I never saw the error on 3.3.x. It may be possible that I imported some clips on 3.3.x, closed VE and then upgraded to 3.4.0 but I'd say it's more likely that I had re-opened 3.3.x after importing the clips and prior to 3.4.0.

Separately, last night I tried to use the new course gauge. The gauge itself seemed to work but I couldn't get the laps to work any more. I was creating a video of a cyclocross race and set the start time to the start of the race which was 7 laps. Depending what I was doing I would either get 1 lap instead of 7 or up to 20. I tried using the Virb course data and the Edge 510 data and neither seemed to work. I also noticed that after setting the start time the 'duration' gauge started a 5s instead of 0s, however this seemed to rectify itself in the export. Perhaps the laps would have worked after exporting but I didn't try. They certainly weren't working whilst editing the video. The course is very compressed with parts of the track getting very close to the start/finish line, but heading in the opposite direction. Does VE check direction as well as proximity to the start/finish line when working out laps?

    Thanks for your help,
    Brett
