VIRB Edit 3.4.0 can be downloaded at http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6591, updating from inside the application will work as well.

  • Added ability to toggle video encoders and decoders between FFmpeg and Media Foundation.
  • Automatically filter out templates and gauges that don't match the current video's G-Metrix.
  • Added Circuit Shape gauge for laps.
  • Improved G-Force display, it's now much less noisy.
  • Improved pitch and roll calculation (better use of gyroscope data).
  • Improved grade calculation.
  • Improved undo/redo performance.

We created a thread for selecting encoder & decoder technology. This should allow users to get back the same export speeds they had earlier.

You can turn off the filtering of templates & gauges under Settings > G-Metrix. But it should be a lot easier know to pick relevant gauges because by default anything that you do not have data for is hidden.

We improved a bunch of G-Metrix calculations as well and added a Circuit Shape gauge which should come in handy for races with many laps. You can now get a smooth looking circuit.
  • I updated both my PC and laptop this morning. Each machine had different videos and both reported errors when opening that 8 and 9 clips respectively couldn't be found. Apart from that it seemed to load ok. I haven't tried creating any videos yet though.

Do you recall what version you upgraded from?

I assume the old version could find the videos (before the upgrade)?
  • Hi Falagar,

I'm not sure what the number was, but it was the previous latest version. I'd never seen the error message before. It continues to come up each time I open Virb Edit.

The clips in question should have an exclamation mark in the media library.

Double-click on one and it should prompt to locate the file.

    Does this work?
  • I've checked both the Gallery and Media Library and can't find any clips or videos that have an exclamation mark. Is there likely to be an error log file somewhere that indicates which clips can't be found?

    Thanks,
    Brett

    Works better, but ..

I tried the software about half a year ago, but had to revert to 2.8 because of many problems.

This version works much better for me, but there seems to be one important graph is still missing, and that is vertical speed (VAM m/h), at least I could not find it in the list of available gauges?

Also may I ask for a possibility to smooth the .fit files, because grade data are almost worthless without a smoothing option?

    Thank you!

Vertical speed is something we'll likely add in the future.

We're working on grade smoothing right now, some changes were made in 3.4, it should be further improved in 3.5.

    Nice, looking forward.

IMO Vertical speed gauge is important and so easy, should take you 5 min, just grade multiplied with speed. Asked for that almost a year ago.
Would work better of course, if the grade data are nicely smoothed, otherwise a bit jumpy.
  • I've just tried to export a video containing several clips from two Virb XE's totally about an hour of footage. I used a separate FIT file from my Garmin Edge 510 to ensure I had a complete map of the ride (and continues time and distance). I used the FFMPEG encoder. I found the following issues:

    1) The sync between both cameras is out by about 2 seconds. EG I can see a car cross an intersection on one camera at time x, but on the other it's at x+2 seconds (or there abouts). I would've thought both cameras would sync perfectly to the separate FIT file? (Both cameras had GPS on so their time should be identical).
    2) When the video moves from one camera to the next there's a lag with the overlays. EG I have clip 1 that goes for say 3 minutes and clip 2 that goes for 1 minutes but starts in the middle of clip 1. It didn't detect them as overlapping so clip 2 is after clip 1 on the timeline (I'm ok with that). When it moves from clip 1 to clip 2 the time in the overlay continues advancing for a few frames before moving back to when clip 2 started. Hopefully that makes sense.
    3) The audio is way out of sync, especially the further in to the export I get. It is in sync in Virb Edit but becomes out of sync in the exported file.

    Brett
  • I've just tried the same video using the Media Foundation Encoder. Issues 1 & 2 above are still a problem, but issue 3 is resolved - the audio remains in sync the whole time.

I've also had another look at issue #1. I've tried using both Virb's FIT files in their respective videos and still note there is a difference of 3 seconds between them. I can see when a particular car passes a white line on the road in both cameras and it's very clear to see the difference (using the Precise Time gauge).
