Upgraded to 3.3.2 and old projects are missing

Hi, I just upgraded to 3.3.2, and now all my open projects are missing from the library.

I can see them in C:\Users\myuser\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\Virb Edit\Database\2\MovieProjects\ but not in the new ...\4\MovieProjects\

What can I do to get the not yet finished projects back? Do I have to roll back to the old version (whatever that was, I cannot remember) or can I get them into the new database somehow? Would it work to just copy the project directories into the "4" database directory? I guess not, as there's probably some mapping to the uuid-style directory names somewhere?

I'd try to delete the \4\ folder and start VIRB Edit again to see if you have any more luck the second time.

    Hi.

I have tried removing the /4/ directory and restarting Virb Edit several times now. Each time, it starts to update the database as expected. When it reaches 52% it crashes. I tried to update to 3.4.0 to see if that made any difference, but I get the exact same behaviour. Windows 7 64bit on 6GB RAM.

The /2/ directory is about 800MB big with 51 folders in the MovieProjects folder. None of these are copied over to /4/. There is 581 folders in Photos, all of those seem to be copied over (at least the folders, haven't checked the actual content there). In RawMovies there is 971 objects, of which 251 seem to be copied over to /4/.

Can I get the latest version using the /2/ database somewhere, so I can finish the ongoing work I have, until you/me/we find a solution?

    Thanks.

    I apologize for the trouble.

Would it be possible for you to share your /2/ database with me somehow? Maybe via Dropbox and a Personal Forum Message? I'd love to get this fixed ASAP.

http://gawisp.com/perry/virb/VIRBEdit_320.exe is a link to the 3.2 installer, that's the last version on /2/.

Thanks. I just PM'd you a link to the zipped /2/ folder.

Thank you very much. I got the PM and we'll take a look.

When you say 'When it reaches 52% it crashes' do you get an error dialog? Can you post whatever info is in that dialog? That might help us as well.

    Really appreciate your help.

    Sorry for not answering earlier.

When Edit crash at 52% I do not get Virb Edit's own crash report window where I can choose to send you the report. I only get the windows "The program Virb Edit has stopped functioning. Press ok to search for a solution" type dialog. Not much help, I know. And it doesn't search for any solution either ;)

My guess is that there's a broken project somewhere, maybe a photo it doesn't find for whatever reason (I noticed the clip library reported quite some not found photos, while I'm pretty sure they are still in the same location. Didn't look closer into that though) But even if a missing photo is the reason, it shouldn't crash, but complete the dB upgrade and then report the problem in the project itself. Is my thinking.

What kind of exports are you doing? Are they long videos at high resolution? Does length of video / resolution make a difference as to if / when it crashes?

I suspect it's a memory issue, but it's hard to tell. We'll keep digging.

I don't really see how the type of exports would have to do with it, as with the initial start it's (as I understand it) more a case of copying files and create a new database format. It's not really loading the video files, is it? But you know better than me what's happening behind the scenes of course ;)

The majority of the clips are 720p 30fps. Most are a couple of minutes, some around 30 minutes. Some unfinished projects have a length of 1-2 hours before trimming and cutting the various clips in them, and they are usually trimmed down to ~15 minutes or shorter before exported. Exports are normally done as 720p 30fps too.

As the crash happen at first start of the new version, while it is converting the database (and copying files into the new database directory structure /4/) it's not really related to any specific video/resolution/crash per se. But I do understand that it could be related to a particular project. I just haven't found any way to figure out which one if so, as *none* of the projects have been copied over to the new dirstructure when it crashes.

I guess the progress bar when converting the db is somehow tied to different actions in the conversion process. Do you know what actions happen around 50% completion? Is that where it would start to copy over the project directories? I've monitored the memory usage while trying the conversion, and it never really peaks or hit the roof from what I can tell, which to me indicate that Edit do not really load the various projects and videofiles during the process, but only read metadata from them?

I'm a UNIX guy, and if I were to troubleshoot this I would trace the system calls the process is doing while trying the conversion to see what it actually try to do when it crash. Not sure if/how I can do this in a window environment. I understand it might be difficult for you to do as you do not have all the data, eg the clips, photos etc that are all related to the projects.

I apologize, I misread your message and got lost between different threads. You are correct, I don't think the types of clips matter in your case.

Have you tried 3.4.2? Delete /4/, run 3.4.2?

We tried to address the issue (using the database you sent via PM) in 3.4.2.
