Split Screen

Can anyone tell me if Virb Edit is capable of doing split screen video yet?
I'm still running 2.9.1 as don't really like the new layout but if it could do split screen, then perhaps might be convinced to update...

(and if it can't, suggest a freebie product that can?)

cheers

    split screen / PIP

    Hi Tim,

you might have a look a this thread, about front and rear camera.

I use shotcut, free open source multiplatform software, tutorials for PIP split screen) can be found here.

Hope this is what your are looking for.

    Erik
  • Thanks for that Erik!
I'm really surprised that VE doesn't support PIP yet.

I'll have a look at Shotcut.

I think the VE team have had thier hands full getting the basics to work, the latest versions are a huge improvement on the early ones, hopefully picture in picture/split screen will follow at some stage.

Split screen has been brought up a number of times, but while we're here... What kinds of layout/split screen options are you looking for?
  • Hi, I´ll just push myself in between this request

I´d like to have a second video in a selectable corner. It would be great if it´s also resizable.

And the superior function would be to split & hide the second video as well. Then it would be possible to cut an uninteresting part and set it to invisible, without affecting the parts behind it (removing would probably make it not synchronously any more). Or resize other parts to fullscreen, when the rear sight is more important :)

But in the first place it would be enough for me to place the second video somewhere in the corner, as I did here. As you can see in that video, the resolution is awful after it was rendered by two different applications :(

Side-by-side is or picture-in-picture definitely something we'd love to do. It's on the road-map but I cannot say when we'll be able to squeeze it in.
  • @cvarley

I guess my original request was just for plain old 50% side by side left and right or top and bottom (choice would be nice) so I can compare two activities run over the same course from two different video sources (recorded on different days for instance).

I use my Virb Elite 100% for cycling - and the more I thought about it, it would be great to have the PIP option as well so I can break out and perhaps replay something interesting that happened, perhaps in slow motion while the main video continues (sound would be from the main video source), or have a forward facing camera as the main view and a rear facing camera or static camera as the smaller view. The ability to activate it and deactivate it during the course of the main video would be necessary as well rather than having it permanently visible.

It would also be nice to be able to edit the secondary video source from within the current project rather than have to edit it all first as a separate project and then just add that bit in. Just select the secondary source and drag it onto the timeline where you want it to start playing, trim left and right, add captions, slow motion etc just like you can now. Not sure if overlays would be necessary, but if it's possible then sure why not.

Hope that helps - I think this would be pretty popular feature to be honest.

It does help, thanks! And it would definitely be a popular feature.

Picture-in-picture options could be plentiful but I'm not sure how you would ideally split the screen 50/50 (vertically or horizontally). Let's say your footage is the standard 16:9 aspect ratio:

When you split the screen, do you expect both parts to be cropped?

    ...or scaled?

...or something else entirely? Would you expect to find options and adjustments? What controls are you looking for?
  • If I did a split screen I would still want to be able to see the whole 16:9 footage of both video sources as in your second example, not cropped as your first example showed.

As for controls, not sure, video editing isn't really my thing as such so those who do it a lot may have other/ better ideas, but as I mentioned above, would be good to be able to edit the second video stream from within the main project rather than have to edit multiple projects seperately and then combine them later. A selection of where you want the PIP window to be left corner, right corner etc or perhaps even freestyle so just drag it where you want and can resize on the fly and be able to choose how it appears, snap, fade, swipe etc perhaps. The same edit functions to be available for the secondary video as there are now for the primary video, overlays, speed changes etc but all from within the one project window - Drag the second video onto the timeline where you want it to start playing, edit it, crop it, metrics etc
