We are happy to announce that VIRB Edit 3.3.0 Beta is available.

You can download it at http://static.garmin.com/desktop-chandler/virbedit/installers/Virb_3.3.0.1.exe.

This version upgrades your database, so any changes you make in 3.3 will not be visible in 3.2. That means that you can try it out without risking your 3.2 data, because you can always roll back.

Please give it a try, we are mostly interested in your playback and export experience. We really appreciate your feedback.

This is the change list:

Added support for merging G-Metrix data from different sources (like adding cadence from an Edge to VIRB X acceleration).
Added support for exporting files greater than 4GB on Windows 7 (was already working on 8 and 10).
Added support for importing files greater than 4GB.
Added support for choosing between FIT speed, calculated 2D and 3D speed.
Added elevation data to GPX export.
Re-added time display to G-Metrix Sync and Activity Start Time pages.
Improved reliability and performance for displaying G-Metrix.
Improved usability and reliability of Garmin Connect integration.
Improved start-up time for users with lots of clips.
Improved speed of loading G-Metrix templates.
Fixed an issue where gauges weren't exported in the correct language.
Fixed an issue where part of the video was cut off in edit mode.
Fixed various other bugs.
  • I've just downloaded this and had a quick go at some videos.

It appears that a video I was unable to export previously will now export. It's huge so I haven't let it finish, but previously it failed at 0% and I've now seen it get to 7% before cancelling it. I'll export it over night tonight.

The MAJOR bug I now have is that 13 out of 15 projects no longer show G-metrix data. It's correctly identifying the FIT file (and i checked that the files are not 0 bytes) but it's not showing any data within the file (on the G-Metrix tab) and the data fields in the overlays are blank. I'm yet to import a new video from the camera to see if that works, but this is a massive issue for me. Trying to re-import the FIT file doesn't work either.

I'm writing a bit of a log of the good and bad things as I find them (which I'll post later), but thought I'd report this now as this makes the new version unusable for me.

    Cheers,
    Brett

Thanks Brett! We really appreciate the feedback.

The G-Metrix not being shown is certainly worrisome. Could you attach a screenshot of the G-Metrix tab in Edit mode and maybe the G-Metrix tab of the properties dialog for a clip G-Metrix is not showing? Does aligning G-Metrix work or make a difference?
  • Thanks Falagar. Here's some screen shots showing the issues:

The first image shows what the G-metrix tab looks like when there's no data. From there I selected 'Import G-metrix' and took three screenshots of that. The first shows the file that is used in the first screen shot (correctly matched but with no data). The next shows what quite a number of files show (ie only g-force) and another showing what I would expect to see (actual data) (note i cropped the map off the last

Attempting to align the data does not help either. Also note the date reported for each file is wildly incorrect.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance!

    Thanks for looking into it,
    Brett

Export not working in the new beta

Imported a 22Gb (just under 2hrs of footage) file from my GoPro (1080p, 60fps) without any issue. Added the GPX file from my Garmin edge and sync'd it, so far so good. Tried to export the clip and keep on getting an error regardless of what settings I choose for the export (tried 720p, 30fps, medium, estimated at 5.5Gb, tried 1080p, 60fps, medium, estimated at 24Gb)

The actual message on the error dialog is "There was an error exporting the video", quite generic and not very useful for troubleshooting.

    This is on a windows 8.1 64bit.

Happy to provide logs if required though I have no idea if Virb Edit generates those by default.

    Regards
    George
  • Here's a bit more feedback (including the issue noted above)...

    Positive
    1) Heading gauge now correctly labelled 'Course'
    2) Able to export a video that previously would not export
    3) Overlays usually appear quicker when editing

    Negative
    1) Unable to select a mapped network drive for file location (have to use full network path) - different from previous version
    2) Appears slower to load projects
    3) G-metrix not loading on most previous projects & videos
    - Checking G-Metrix tab just shows a loading type icon with no data
    - Selecting to import G-Metrix already has the correct file selected (and identifies it as 'This log appears to match your clip!')
    - Unable to select 'use this log' and all previous log files are not available to use either
    - Trying to re-import the FIT file shows no data in it (even though the file size is ~6mb)
    4) Export at 'max' quality results in a video bitrate of ~10mbps whereas the original is ~25mbps.
    - Either target quality is still ignored or it's not exporting at the quality selected
    - Output file of 11gb took somewhere between 15 and 20 hours to export (would have considered this reasonable if exported to the estimated size of 36gb)
    - For reference I checked a few exports from the previous version at 'High' quality (knowing it's ignored), resulting in a range of bitrates from 12mbps to 80mbps (yes 80!) bit rate
    - I would expect Max to output at 25mpbs and every other setting to be something less. How does it really work?
    5) Had it crash when attempting to load G-metrix from the G-metrix tab (error log submitted)

    Cheers,
    Brett

    Thanks George!

VIRB Edit sends these logs automatically, we can look them up. If you go to Menu, then About and then 'Copy ID to clipboard' and then Paste (Ctrl-V) into here (or a private message to me) we can locate your logs.

It would be even more helpful if you turned on extra logging (also on About page) and tried to export one more time. Then we'll get even more information in the logs.

Thanks Brett! (2) on the positives I am very happy to hear.

Let's see if we can tackle these negatives.

    1. You mean for picking the export location?
    2. That's surprising, we actually see faster load times here. Are you sure about this? What kind of projects seem to load especially slowly? And when do you experience this (entering edit mode? after making changes?) I wonder if this is related to (3).
    3. When you see the loading symbol, did you ever wait a while to see if it finishes loading? Is this a very large FIT file for this video? We'll get this figured out.
    4. I wouldn't worry about the bit rate too much, the encoder tries to be smart about this and only encodes at whatever current bit rate is needed. I am more interested in the quality of the video. Does it look worse than before? The old version used a different video framework and having these high bit rates was one of its issues. If you don't mind, try exporting a smaller video at different qualities and see if you notice differences. Lower quality settings should (generally) yield lower bit rates.
    5. We should have gotten the crash via error reporting then and will look into it.

Thanks again for giving us this feedback. It's hugely appreciated.
  • Hi Falagar,

    To answer your questions:
    1) Yes, when I first opened it, it asked for the export folder (which previously was a mapped network drive). The dialog box that comes up ignores mapped network drives. Instead I had to go through the Network structure to find the folder. It's not major, more a minor inconvenience but once it's set it doesn't need to be changed.
    2) This is my impression. When I double click a project it seems to take longer than before to open up for editing. The flipside is that the overlays appear a lot quicker once it's loaded. Again, not major, just a minor inconvenience.
    3) I left it for a quite a while and never saw it update. Previously it would be instantaneous to display the data within the file (same video used before & after for comparison). The FIT file is about 6mb.
    4) I haven't tried this yet, but will look into it. I know the quality that comes out of Virb Edit vs what is displayed in Facebook and YouTube is considerably different (ie the quality takes a massive hit when uploading, but I understand that's nothing to do with Garmin)
    5) Excellent. On the plus side, the video that previously caused it to crash 99% of the time (and not export) has now exported without crashing, so I'm pretty happy with that!

Thanks for looking in to these!

    Cheers,
    Brett

Hey Brett, I'm looking into some of your issues and sent you a PM. It doesn't always notify, so if you wouldn't mind checking that and replying.

    Thanks!

    1. Hmm, odd. I can see mapped network drives on my machine. And I don't think we touched that part of the code.
    2. We'll run some tests here to make sure.
    3. Thanks for the info. Looks like we can repro this here.
    4. Yeah, you want to compare the exported video before it goes to Facebook or YouTube.
    5. We found the report of the crash and alanebro82 already fixed it.

    Thanks again.
