VIRB and GPS - how to auto sync G-Metrix

Hi -
I just tried out my Virb basic for the first time and I recorded two video segments while on a short bicycle ride. However now back on Mac I am finding it really tough getting the G-Metrix to match on screen in Virb Edit 3.0.1 with the GPS data.
I triggered both recordings using a Garmin GPS (64S) with a remote option.
Surely there must be an alternative to manually aligning the clips with the GPS data - is the record instruction not embedded in the metadata in the GPS file, allowing Virb Edit to make the alignment automatically?
And if not, what is the best workaround?
Thanks in advance!
  • Hi. I plan to buy the same camera and I am curious if you managed to find the answer?
Is it easy to sync the video with an external .gpx file?
  • VIRB Edit will attempt to align your camera's footage with the manually assigned GPS log based on the video's time stamp, but it will be a manual process to get sub-second precision. Changing time zones before downloading your videos, or your camera and GPS simply disagreeing on the time when your recording took place, may cause this automatic alignment to be further off.

If you want accurate, automatic sub-second alignment with GPS logs, you'll want a VIRB Elite or better.

Related question: I've set the time on my VIRB (Basic) to be the same as my phone (in charge of recording GPS track), so in theory the syncing should work out of the box, however it's usually miles out. Is this because when the video i being imported into VIRB Edit the times on the video are changed to the current import time?

I'm just wondering if there is a workflow that would with this syncing.

I would expect this to work. VIRB Edit should be preserving the creation date of the video when it copies it to your computer, and if the times are in sync that should get you a good starting point for syncing (but you'll still need to manually sync to get sub-second precision).

If the auto-sync looks like it's off by hour(s), it could be a timezone issue. If it just auto-syncs to the very beginning of the track, then VIRB Edit likely failed to find any overlapping times. Do the times look correct in the G-Metrix tab?
