I note that the map does not show on the published video. Can anyone explain how to add it, or direct me to some good software that I can use to create an animated map?

Also,

While the numerical speed display on the video is showing kph properly the gauge is several orders of magnitude higher. Suspect a conversion issue here but not sure how to fix.

First of all, VIRB Edit does not export the map due to some legal issues.
If you want to have an animated map in your video you can do a couple of things.
Take a screen-capture-program like Direct Stream Recorder (http://www.sytexis.com/dsrecorder.php). This is an old, not up-to-date program that works for me.
Open the preview screen and capture the window while you play the video. There probably will be some quality loss.
I've used Direct Sream Recorder to make these video's https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?75263-How-To&p=370653#post370653
Another option is only to capture the map from the preview and use a video editing program like PowerDirector or Pinacle and use the Picture-in-Picture feature to add it onto your video.
In this case you will need to re-align the video and the map.
