Idea for time sync on Virb

Hi all,

This is for anyone using the virb with a Garmin edge computer (I would assume majority of users).
Maybe this was already brought up or discussed already but wanted to bring it up anyways.
I am a bit baffled by the fact that I have to manually sync the video and the gps file by finding a place I know in the video and the same place in the file.
When you use the edge to control the virb they communicate via ant so that if you press the take photo button the computer transmits to the camera the command.
How complicated would it be that every time the edge detects a virb device to send a time sync command to it so that it has the exact time of the edge (which is gps time).
In that way the video and maps are always synched...Also you can add some menu option that does a manual sync and overwrites the time on the virb with the time on the edge.
Am I missing something?

Thanks,

Shai
  • Funny i said exactly the same thing, even put it in as a feature request .... seems like a pretty obvious thing to me.
  • Idea for time sync on Virb

It's so simple to mark the photos from my camera with EXIF GPS tags from eTrex gpx track. The software uses the time stamps on photos and equal time stamps of GPS points from my gpx file. You can also set the gap between time on camera and eTrex. I was wandering why it can't be the same in case of syncing of action cam movie with gpx?
At the beginning I didn't know that VIRB Edit automatically syncs the video with gpx time because my videos lost original creation_time tag during conversion. So after uploading to VIRB Edit every video started at the beginning of the gpx track. Anyway the VE feature of correction the time gap between video tag and gpx for all videos in the clip would be great.
  • there has to be a better way to sync .fit to video files

WOW, I bought the VIRB XE instead of GoPro thinking it would simplify data overlays and get them frame perfect every time and eliminate any possibility of drift during video export process.

Unless I'm missing something the Virb Edit software cannot locate the correct .fit file and cannot sync it either. The file names on the card are of no help and appear to have been designed by somebody with a 1970's CS education.
