VIRB Edit 2.7.0 released

The new version of VIRB Edit is available here. Release changes include:

  • Added graphs
  • Added lap data gauges
  • Added undo/redo for edit mode
  • Added miscellaneous new gauges and templates
  • Added the ability to save individual frames of the video as a picture with gauges and location data
  • Video sharing services can now be picked directly from the editing or playback views
  • New titles now use your last used title settings
  • Fixed a problem where GPS data could fail to display for some clips after they were added to videos
  • Fixed GPS sync issues that could occur when using transitions
  • Fixed other miscellaneous issues

Note that setting the Activity Start Time will set the beginning of the data that is graphed as well as set the start/end of lap position. If your GPS records lap data, that will always be used though.

As always, please feel free to post issues and questions on the forum. Typically, it's better to start a new thread for issues.

[paxter1 edit: added video that demonstrates some of this version's new features :)]
  • Yay! Must download that now.

I see a few issues I've had to deal with, and especially this one: Fixed a problem where GPS data could fail to display for some clips after they were added to videos

    Thanks!
  • I really like this feature:

"Added the ability to save individual frames of the video as a picture with gauges and location data"

VE even saves the location data to the screen cap's EXIF data.
  • I just tried the new elevation graph. Earlier today I tried it on a video and it failed (didn't show the correct profile), but just now I tried it on a different video and it worked fine. Way cool. The difference may be that the video where it worked was continuously recorded, while the other had a battery swap in it. But I'll investigate some more and see if I can figure out what's going on.

Do we have any control over the appearance and/or size? I'd rather have a profile that looked like the map trace, a white line on an otherwise transparent background. I don't even need the elevation showing (a gauge can do that), but just the usual red dot at the current location (or in this case, elevation) would be fine.

Followup: the video that worked was my "3 hump" ride. They showed up just fine, and the profile looks perfect, with all three major peaks showing. The ride that fails is the "2 hump" ride, and I noticed it right away, since it was only showing the first climb and descent. The ride was 1:54 long, and I was recording 720@30fps (while the 3 hump ride was recorded at 1080@30fps). The failing video consists of 3 clips. As soon as it passes the end of the first clip, suddenly the profile looks fine and the full profile is shown. Back up into the first clip, and the profile gets cut off. The second to third clip boundary doesn't do this. Weird.
  • >New titles now use your last used title settings

Not here, for me. They always come back with the font size of 60 though the last title I created was 100. Tried repeatedly and it always came back to 60.
    • Added lap data gauges

This seems to be based on location on a circular track.

This would be really awesome if this would also read split times from the GPX, so this could be used with non-circular tracks as well.

Many of Garmin's fitness devices have a "Lap" button you can press to write laps out to the FIT files used by VIRB Edit. We should successfully find and display those for you.

I'm not aware of any device that records that kind of data into GPX at the moment.

I'm using Forerunner 310XT, and for its data, Garmin Training Center marks laps in GPX files by using multiple <trkseg> elements but for some reason Garmin Connect does not. The <wpt> element is also sometimes used for laps but apparently not in Garmin products.

Of course, if FIT files already have the lap information, then just actually reading that information would be enough :)
Or adding support for TCX files, which have the information as <lap> elements.
  • I have no idea what is going on. I use to find Garmin Virb Edit great. But since updating to this version (2.7.0). It keeps on crashing! Also I go to edit a video. I can hear it, but where the video should be, I just get a black screen!

    HELP!!

Are you reporting an issue with Mac VIRB Edit? The Windows version recently had some pretty big player changes, which improve things dramatically for most users, but there weren't similar changes on the Mac version, so I'd be a bit surprised with issues there.

Regardless, filling out the error report dialog and submitting your crash information there is probably the easiest way for you to report any issues you're having in VIRB Edit to us. Please feel free to post your OS/app versions and issues to the forums as well, though.
  • Version 2.70 is still not available via the Mac App Store.
