Trouble with GPS-signal on Virb videos

Hi,

My setup:
- Two Virb Elites
- Garmin Edge 1000
- Latest Virb Edit SW (All sensors was disabled but GPS)

Trouble/fault:
I am recording movies and uploading to kinomap.com for my indoor training this season. Yesterday I did a two hour ride with my Virbs and Edge 1000. Everything looked fine; both Virbs started to record when I started the ride on my Edge. The front cam was mounted upwards, and it was recording at all times. Everything seemed ok. The trip was ended and the Virbs saved gps info and went into idle. When I uploaded fraom Edge to Garmin Connect I confirmed that the whole track had been record on the gps.

When I then imported clips from Virb I recognized that on some of the clips the gps-trac was grey instead of black. When I ran the "grey" clips I found that they grey part did not have any gps-info - the "pointer" did not follow in the map. I then tried to remove all the gps-info from the clips and imprt gpx from Edge 1000. I had the same result.

PLZ ADVICE!

were the grey bits straight lines?
  • were the grey bits straight lines?

Yes. The outline of the track is perfect, partly black and some part (no GPS) grey. Also suddenly within grey lines a dot of black WITH GPS. Very strange. I can't believe that I have lost reception on both Virb and Edge for several long intervals.

The grey part is the part where we have a track, but the track is not part of the clip. So I wouldn't expect the pointer to follow at these parts. The grey line is still used for duration and distance calculations though.

If you are running the 2.6 Beta, you can see the properties of each clip (right-click on a clip in the Clips Library and choose 'Properties'). Then under the 'GPS Info' you can see the file we have for the active track (which will be displayed in black) and the possible FIT file for the whole activity (displayed in grey). Maybe that will help you see what's going on.

If it's still not working right, feel free to share your data files and we'll take a look.
  • Thx for answering quickly. This is very important to me. I use Mac and Virb Edit 2.6.0. I have taken a screenshot and also try to attach the GPX from my Edge 1000 but how? Hope you are able to sort thing out for me - I´m confused.

You could upload the file to Dropbox for example and share a link to it.

I am also moving this thread over to the Mac section.

  • Hi,

An update from me in my struggle to get Virb Edit to work properly. I´m getting quite tired of this and happy if someone got update on fix for me...

    Info:
Recorded ride for 3,5 hours (Virb Elite)
    Edge 1000

    Fault:
As seen on the picture attached the clips are all alligned, but the gps-track is a mix between black and grey lines. Grey=no gps fix.
I try to replace ALL clips´gps info with info from the .fit file from the gps. It works well in the start, I have to allign each gps-track. BUT then it screwes up towards the end. Suddenly the route "ends" prematuerly. Let me try to explain: As I am aligning the last clips (6 clips) the route on the "adjustment bar" ends even tough there is a long way on the map to the target. (picture 2) Why??

As I understand there are three ways to have data on the clips:
    1. Incorporated with the Virb - has worked 100% very few times
    2. Replace GPS with GPX file from connect or Edge. (manually for each clip)
    3. Replace GPS with FIT file directly from the Edge.

I am confused and fed up. I would like this to work. Any hints?

As other people have stated, gray lines typically mean that there is a GPX fix there, just that there is no video there, so you'll always skip over that chunk of the GPS log when scrubbing through the video.

It may be that the map in your area has "gray lines" instead of roads and we're misunderstanding your issue, though. The track you uploaded to Google Drive requires that we request access via a Google account. Can you change those permissions or e-mail it to mac.virbedit _at_ garmin.com ?
