VIRB Edit 2.6.0 Released

So the latest Virb Edit for Mac has been released, and if you originally downloaded it through the Mac store, then it'll show up as an update via the OS. I often ignore those update notices but spotted this one and downloaded it.

You can probably also update from within VE.

This is the Clip Transition tab: basic, but it works nicely.

  • Here's the VE Export screen:

I am liking this version a lot. I've just created a short video with different types of clips and transitions, and it worked really well. Will post the video asap.
  • A quick video with titles, and transitions, going from 720p@60FPS to 1080p@30FPS, to 720p@30FPS.

  • The "Upload to Facebook" is a setting you have to change to in Preferences. It's either YouTube or Facebook. Too bad VE can't be configured to give both options without changing the preferences. Would not surprise me if this was added to an update before too long.

  • the transition images are copied from iMovie. I hope Garmin won't get in trouble with Apple over this...
  • Found a bug in 2.6.0, it appears.

Shot some video today with my Elite and imported it to my Mac, and "Preview" in the "Video Gallery" shows gps data, but as soon as I "Create Video" with that same file, the gps data does not show in the gauges, though a track corresponding with the video shows up in the map screen.

There is no red dot in the map screen though, so I can't see where the video and location correspond, or drag that dot around to change the video.
  • Further to the bug I reported in the previous message, it appears that VE 2.6.0 retains the gps data and displays it in videos you create if the video was already imported to VE before the update.

I was trying to figure out how I was able to create my short demo video with 2.6.0 the first day I updated, so I went back into VE and chose a raw video which predates the update, and sure enough it retains the data in the "Create Video" window for that earlier video.

But when I create another video from footage I shot yesterday it loses the gps data, or at least it does not show that data in the gauges, though the track does appear in the map window on the right of the screen.

    Very odd.
  • Further to the bug I reported, I just found out that if you "Trim" the video in the editing window, it then displays the track data in the gauges!

So that's a workaround to the bug.

Edit - not sure if it's a global workaround or just something that fixed that particular file. No more time to test right now.
  • I'm seeing some bugs in 2.6.0 myself. I did a 2:45 mountain bike ride, recording at 720@30fps. The first two clips are flawless, with the barometric altimeter starting at only 40 ft off, which is acceptable. I rode for 1:30 and stopped.

After that, though, comes the problems. At the stop, I shut the VIRB down, changed batteries (since it wouldn't have lasted), turned it back on, waited for GPS lock, and started off. The third clip, when imported, showed nothing in the track data gauges. The fourth clip looked normal, showing the proper data.

So since I want distance/duration to work anyway and the data wasn't showing, I replaced the track for the third clip with the track from my Edge 800. But again the misalignment problem turns up, this time at the beginning of the track. I have to drag the control for the Edge's track by roughly an hour and a half before the red dot on the map begins to move from the starting point. Since the track is a total of 2:55 long, and I stopped at 1:30, this means that the end of the drag bar is at roughly 1:25 into the track, so I can't align the track to the video at all. So for now I'm going to have to give up on this video. I tried replacing the track with the second large .fit file on the VIRB, started after the camera was turned on at the stop, but that didn't align correctly, either, and wouldn't solve the distance/duration problem in any case. VIRB Edit 2.6.0 from the App Store, OS X 10.9.4.
  • The third clip, when imported, showed nothing in the track data gauges.

Did you try trimming a little bit off the start of the clip which showed no gauge data? I found when I did so, the gauges/data appeared magically and the file was fine.

Preview showed gauge data, but create video showed none until I clipped the first bit off.
  • By the time I saw your post, it was too late. I had already replaced the track with the track from the 800. I tried trimming the first second to see if that would help with the alignment problem, but it didn't. Looking in ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/VIRB Edit/Database/0/RawMovies, there are 4 virb_track.gpx with today's date, so it looks as if the tracks were all imported but just didn't show in the 3rd clip.

Checking the .fit file from my 800 and the EXIF data from the clips shows that the track from the 800 covers the entire period, as expected, so it should be possible to align it. I did notice something I didn't know about, though. I have my 800 set to 1s recording, but auto pause is on. It looks as if when I'm stopped it doesn't continue to record every 1 s, but at irregular intervals. Maybe that causes problems. Clip 3 starts at 11:00:05, and from the .fit file I started moving at 11:00:11. The point previous to that is 10:59:42.
