My VIRB Elite Still Locks up all the time

I shouldn't say all the time, some days it works fine, but a lot of the time, it locks up.

If your unit does NOT lock up, what memory card do you use?

Brand
Size
Speed

Oh - and do you use any sensors?
I use a HRM and Speed and Cadence Sensor

The memory card I have is:

It apparently is 10MB/s WRITE speed.

Here's my situation:

Thanks,

  • I got another unit too, but it didn't help. They should be well aware of this issue.

My camera locked up again last night. I thought formatting my memory card to FAT32 was the solution but it wasn't, but I have another theory now.

Last night, I had the camera mounted upside down (with "this side down" in the settings) and image stabilization "ON" and it locked up.

I pulled the battery, mounted the camera right side up (with "this side up") and image stabilization "OFF" and it didn't lock up for an hour of continuous video recording.

I'm now suspecting either flipping the video or image stabilization or both might be the culprit.

    I'll keep you posted.
  • i use image stabilization (not that it does much good) all the time. I don't think that's the problem.

Get in contact with hardware support (link in FALAGAR's signature).
    Mine has been replaced.

    Had 2 lockups,
1 I was placing it behind the windshield and moved the slide a bit forward and back. It stayed on and wouldn't react.
2 While it was in the pocket of my coat it went on recording and when I took it out it showed the power sign. No reaction on the buttons.
So this was not in normal use.
It took two weeks (actually one and a half if I was faster in picking it up) from delivering it to the store and picking up a new one.

It apparently has no mechanism in place that shuts the camera down in a controlled way before the battery gets too low for saving the recording.
To day I started a recording. When I cam back the battery low sign was shown. I stopped the recording and turned the camera off. The video was not saved...
When you use the camera with the VIRB Remote there is no indication that the battery is low so things like this are waiting to happen.
On a couple of occasions when I started the camera, it turned on but no picture in the viewfinder.
After turning it off than on again it worked.
At least this VIRB Elite goes to USB mode when connected to a PC, the biggest problem on the previous one.
  • I've had 4 successful mountain bike rides with my camera with image stabilization off. Going for a 5th one today and it's going to be a long ride so should be a real good test.

Mine does. My wife's does. They both shut down nicely this afternoon while on the top of our helmets, needing nothing on our part.

And I was using the Remote at the time, so when I tried to take another picture, the LED flashed for about 20 seconds to tell me the camera wasn't responding.
  • I have just opened a service case with Garmin to get a third replacement. My last device has the hanging issues as well as it stops responding to my two remotes after 10 minutes.
