Video Output While Recording

I got a really neat accessory for my VIRB for my birthday - a Phantom Quadcopter! Works really well - easy to fly and carries the VIRB easily using the "industry standard" adapter. Now I want to upgrade it with First Person View (FPV) and that requires live video while recording.

Does the VIRB support this at all? Maybe through the HDMI port?

If not, I want to add this to my VIRB wish list.

Thanks

  • Easy enough to find out. Connect your Virb to your TV, using an A to C (HDMI-mini) cable, and see if you get video output while recording.

Just tried with a type D (micro) cable and no, it doesn't work. Plugging the cable in activates the playback mode.

Does anybody have experience with the video out on the USB A/V cable?

    Thanks.

I believe that you can see a fullscreen live feed of the video on your mobile device *if the VIRB is not recording* while it's hooked up via wifi to the mobile app. Hooking up to a VIRB via wifi requires you to turn on the wifi option on the VIRB itself, and then join that wifi network on your smartphone/ipod touch/tablet.

I don't recommend this for your flying idea. The video would cut out suddenly if you flew out of wifi range (I don't know the official specs but ~40 feet seems reasonable, maybe more outside with line of sight).

I can't use wifi anyway as it interferes with the flight control link.

Other than that, its a great camera.

Looks like you're in business now with Virb firmware ver 3.70, as long as you can use the composite video cable.
