GPX and Photo EXIF Differences

Hi

I getting differences between the EXIF data in photos captured during a video. The lat/lon in the GPX file is right but that in the picture's EXIf is not. Usually off by 100's of feet.

Also getting nonsense numbers for heading. Should be between 0-359.99 and I'm getting 474567984/1

Thanks

Mike V.
  • Mike_V,

Thank you for your report. What are you using to reviewing these details (Lat./Long. and Heading) about the video file?

I'm using PhotoShop to review the EXIF data in the photos and comparing the lat/lon to that found in the GPX file using the timestamp.
  • What's are the coordinates if you navigate to the photo outside of PhotoShop, right click on the photo and view the properties of the photo under the details (tab) > GPS? These instructions are of course for a Windows machine. I'm trying to duplicate and I have no issues with my lat/long by following the method I described above. I'm wondering if PhotoShop is the culprit of if in fact we have an an issue.

My apologies. I cannot reproduce the lat/lon discrepancies. I'm not sure what happened the first time.

However, the heading issue remains. The heading on one image should be 252T and it reads 4294967191/1

  • Thanks, MIKE_V. I'll look into this and see if I can duplicate. If you don't take a photo while recording a video is the heading information accurate?

Good question. I'll have to experiment. Where does the heading come from? Does it depend on movement?
  • That's the question I'm trying to answer. To my knowledge we shouldn't be writing heading information because the VIRB Elite only uses a GPS compass. This means that movement over 2.3 mph is necessary and faster speeds only improve the compass reading. The reason we wouldn't write it out is because the probability of a bad heading value being written at very low speeds or standing still is likely. Therefore we'd just remove it. I looked at several photos in PhotoShop this morning and none showed heading data. Can you tell me which tab your finding this data under? Are you looking under File > File Info > GPS Data?

I'm using PS CS4 which doesn't have a GPS tab; I look at the raw data tab.

I have two photos taken during a video while flying. The speed was 80 kts. For the first, the track was about 252T and the EXIF "Direction" was "4294967191/1". The second was taken while on a track of 74T and the direction is shown as "74".
  • I just looked at some of the pictures I recently took with my VIRB Elite, and I don't see heading in the EXIF data. For example (once again the lack of a fixed width font here is going to screw things up):

The only "/"s I see are in the Shutter Speed and Exposure Time. Is this an old Mac, maybe PPC? Endian problems might explain the weird value.

I'm looking at the raw data as extracted by the XMP plugin in PhotoShop.

The data is valid for one of the photos but not for the other.
