First day of use - multiple Virb issues

Hi All

Today was my first chance to try out my Virb Elite on my cycle into and back from work. It's not been a very good first day...

I have a helmet mounted Virb elite that I am attempting to control with my Garmin 810 cycle computer.

  • On the way in for some reason the 810 stopped being able to find the camera so I was unable to start and stop.
  • Power save mode, despite being turned on, has no effect. The camera does not turn off itself.
  • If I Turn the camera on by just starting to record when I stop it from the 810 the camera stops, shuts down, starts up and starts recording again.
  • On the way home the camera became unresponsive and the viewfinder was frozen. No buttons did anything other than holding down the power button for a long time.
  • I have set loop mode for 10 minutes. I have many many 2 minute clips on my SD card. Too short and none were deleted.

Those are all bugs IMHO but these are things that I don't like:

  • Incredibly slow to copy clips into Virb Edit
  • Very slow to copy clips directly from camera to computer
  • Hard to remove SD card to get the clips off there quickly
  • No audible beep to let you know when the camera is no longer recording either from battery issues or SD card space. If it's on my helmet how do I know when I need to put in a new battery or memory card.

I updated the firmware on the camera this morning so it is presumably the latest version.

Has anyone else had similar issues?

And why don't we have a proper forum for it rather than just a software forum?
  • One more issue. Virb Edit seems to take an absolute AGE to prepare a 6 minute video....
  • I think I've replied on dc rainmaker - same issue of 810 losing the Virb - have emailed Garmin but no reply as yet.
  • I contacted Support and then shipped it back to Garmin. Some users on these forums claims they have a stable unit.
  • Thanks for the replies (why didn't I get emails about them I wonder).

A few more issues. Last night when I tried to upload a video to youTube it spent probably half an hour rendering a 6 minute clip to then fail when trying to upload. I then had to wait another half hour to render it again and upload manually - which worked fine.

This morning I turned on the camera and started it recording when I pressed start on my Garmin 810. That worked fine. At the end of my ride (about 80 minutes) the garmin could no longer find the virb so of course when I stopped my cycle computer it did not stop the Virb. This morning I did not do anything to the camera at all after I started it. No pictures or stops or restarts or anything from the 810 or directly on the camera.

    And you don't believe that?

Have you updated your Virb to version 3.12 of the firmware? The camera I bought a few days ago came with version 2.60, so maybe yours needs updating. I found 3.12 solved a lot of problems.

Loop Mode records in short segments depending on how long the Loop Mode is set to. 10 minute mode does give you a lot of 2 minute clips.

And what does this mean? "none were deleted." Clips won't delete themselves.

Aren't they on 3.20 now? Mine's got the latest firmware and I had the issue with the Edge losing it (and subsequent freezes).
  • You're right. 3.20. Should have checked before posting.
  • Thanks for the replies (I'm still not getting notified of replies...)

Yes, camera has been updated to 3.20 before I used it on my first day.

Does that make any sense? Why would I want 2 minute clips if I selected a 10 minute loop? I end up with 30+ clips on my camera from one ride!

And what does this mean? "none were deleted." Clips won't delete themselves.

I was expecting in loop mode that it would keep the last x minutes of video so at the end of a 3 hour ride I would have one (or at most) 2 video clips 10 minutes long. The rest would be deleted.

If I have 60 clips on the camera after 1 day's cycling it's going to be very hard to find the clip that I want. And probably take all night to import them into Virb Edit.

I never said it made sense. But that's the way it works. It's not a bug.

Again, it just doesn't work that way. Besides, I think that would be a disaster. I wouldn't want my camera deleting amazing footage with "the last x minutes of the 3 hour ride". It's fairly easy for you to delete it yourself afterwards, but if the camera is set to delete it automatically, there will be tears...

    See responses above.

But, with regard to your complaint about "Power Save" not working, (Power save mode, despite being turned on, has no effect. The camera does not turn off itself.) "Power Save" doesn't work if you have the camera's "Remote" mode set to "On". I tried that out myself this morning.
