Virb Elite firmware 3.2 hard freeze at beginning of recording.

Since there is no Virb hardware forum, I am forced to place this here.

I am using a brand new Sandisk Ultra 32GB HC U1 microSD.

I've experienced this issue on several of my rides, causing me to have no footage - a clip of a road raging driver was missed which would have been REALLY helpful to have. I reset the Virb and it seemed to be OK, but after several rides realized my heart rate monitor and cadence sensor were turned off. After I turned them back on, this freezing issue occurs often.

I start and stop recording with the slide button. When this issue occurs, at the end of my ride I see that 8 or so seconds have been recorded, and the screen is stuck and seems to require the battery to be removed to fix.

Any ideas? Any logs I can harvest from the device to send to someone? Do I have to replace my brand new SD card? Do I need to replace my Virb?
  • I have another same model card that I forgot about (very seldom used) and have been giving it a go. I turned tones on and my two trips today were interrupted with a beep about 10 minutes into my ride - I kept going but when I looked at the Virb after arriving at my destination, it showed the "no SD" card icon. A power off works, then powering it on boots it right back up - no messing around with the SD card required. I lock it down with the sliding mechanism but it seems to be a bit mobile in there if pushed lightly...problem?

Anyways, plugging the Virb into my computer reveals two corrupted, zero byte video files.
  • I wonder if the card holder door is loose and causing these 'lock-ups' on screen when the card is not making contact within the compartment? I'm sure the interruption during recording could cause some strange reactions by the camera. Do you know what the beep was referencing? Probably the banner stating the card was no longer in the device? If you take a piece of tape and tape the microSD compartment door down so no movement occurs, does this resolve the issue?

Brand new virb, first ride and it froze twice on me.....grrrr

1st time, I had just changed settings to add the HRM.

Second time, I had changed settings to do time lapse.

I get a screenshot constant, even when it has stopped recording and run out of power.

But it seemed to have recorded not on time lapse though.

    Now virb edit crashes importing.

Does anybody make anything that works first time anymore?

I also having this issue but with the basic Virb, I have taken the card out of the camera and reformatted it on the computer and it works fine. I deleted content via the device yesterday and it froze. I have the latest software and a class 10 card. I'm going to try it again today and see if it is OK as I have a feeling it is something to do with the card and the Garmin Virb erasing data on it? Does this sound possible?

If it freezes again I'm sending it back it just annoying carrying a camera like yesterday on a very beautiful 200k ride through the Welsh mountains and having no footage. The sun was seen out I could prove the sun comes out in Wales if the blooming camera worked!
  • When you say freeze can you recall if the red LED was still flashing with a frozen image on the ViewFinder or was the LED not flashing? Was an image on the view finder? Your 'record' sequence will be handy in letting me know what you may have experienced. Did you begin recording by flipping the record switch or did you power the device on first and then flip the record switch? Were you controlling the recording with the VIRB App or VIRB remote?

For me the screen freezes which ever way I choose to record and the LED is flashing I think (I'll double check now if it freezes). If it freezes when I get home and remove battery and restart the Virb the unit just freezes immediately and only formating the card in the PC seems to get it working again. I'm just going out now with the card formatted from the computer and seeing if it happens again. I'm pretty certain it is connected with deleting data via the virb.

Just to be clear however I start recording when it starts freezing it freezes straight away. So say it started by sliding the red button (my prefered method as it does not go into standby and use battery power) or if I turn the unit on then start recording. If I stop and take the battery out and reinsert it will just freeze again. Only reformatting the memory card gets it working again. Class 10 Sandisc Ultra card and latest software. I have just ordered a different make of card to see if that helps.

Just been out with the card formatted in the pc and no issues. I'll try erasing data on device tomorrow and see if it freezes.

I have been having a similar issue with my Virb it is currently running the 3.20 software, it seems to record in time lapse but when I try to record HD it displays in the viewfinder but is frozen. I have t pull the battery to get the unit to shut off and get nothing recorded. Very frustrating to say the least, because with prior versions of the software I have been able to record HD no issues. I am using a SanDisk Extreme Plus 32 GB microSDHC Class 10 UHS-I Memory Card (SDSDQX-032G-U46A). Is there a better card or a preferred card to use to avoid the freezing issue?
  • The preferred card is one that works, which your's isn't. They're not that expensive, so you should probably buy another from another manufacturer and see what happens. I switched from SanDisk, where I had lots of freezes, to Sony and the number of freezes dropped tremendously (but isn't zero). Other people have reported good behavior from SanDisk cards, though. It seems to depend very much on individual cards, so you should at least try another.
  • It's not your SD Card. It's the VIRB.

Happens to be all the time and I've tried everything.
