Two Virb Elite (front+rear), PIP, Virb Edit

Team TT race, one Virb Elite in the front, one Virb Elite in the rear:

Here the steps I followed:
Video files from the two cameras loaded on iMovie, sync'ed between them and created PIP switching between front and rear view. 36 min .mp4 file generated.
Output from previous step loaded in Virb Edit, attached the .fit file recorded with Edge 510. Customized dashboard. Sync'ed the track with the video. Generated (36 min) .mp4 file.
File from previous step loaded on iMovie. Cut some scenes, added intro and ending titles, added logos, added (copyright free) background music. Generated 14 min finalized video.
Uploaded on YouTube.

  • What power meter are you using? I notice that your power output lags a bit after you start moving off as it does in my video:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wYcML99qXo

This is with a Stages power meter. I can understand why it might lag a bit as it only gets power for half the stroke (when the left leg is pushing).

On my old setup I didn't have this problem:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fr3JW7ixIzA

This was with a contour camera with data coming from my Garmin 810.

I am not sure if the problem is with the Stages or the Virb.

I should re-do y first video with data from my Garmin 810 rather than the data from the Virb.

I also noticed on my video that the specially the speed jump around a lot. I suspect due to poor GPS reception. I have since linked the camera to my speed / cadence sensor but I am not sure if it will have any effect. I don't know if the Virb will use the speed sensor.
  • I've now bought another Virb, with the rear mounted one the "slave" (although I control them from my Edge). I can get iMovie to do side-by-side easy enough, but I can't see how to do the PIP switching that there is in the movie above - how do you do that? If I say "swap" I end up with two small pictures.

My iMovie setup is in Italian, let me try to explain how I did the PIP with swap.
Two videos (one from the from, one from the rear) in the timeline, obviously synced. "Adjust" button (the one in the top right, on top of the preview window), click the first icon on the left and the place the "secondary" picture in the preview window in the place you like (in my case at the bottom right of the preview window). Then select "PIP" from the drop down menu (first from left) and then "Swap" from the second from left drop down menu.

    Hope it helps.

Power meter was a Garmin Vector.
  • That's really cool. I never thought of importing the data file after editing. I've been merging the output from a Virb Elite and aGoPro for multiple camera angles but I've been exporting from Virb Edit with the overlay then combining it with the GoPro and an external audio feed in Final Cut. The problem is I only get the overlay when viewing the Virb angle. I'm excited to try this option. Here's an example, I spend more time flying than cycling these days.

Nice video and angles. What are you using for your mounts? Garmin just announced an aviation package which includes a filter for making catching the prop more accurate rather than being deformed.

The problem I've had with applying the gadgets after doing the video editing is that the alignment does not track for the entire video well. But for aviation, this would be much less of an issue. For example, when I manually align the video with the GPS file at a certain point, it is perfect at that spot but a few minutes later in the video it is slightly off and you can hear my bike freewheeling before the cadence starts slowing down. I'm hoping the accuracy with this will become better as the app matures.

I started with the Virb suction mount but it kept falling off the window (not cool when you're flying) since it's not exactly flat. I'm now using a window mount from rammount.com. I highly recommend anything from them, it's rock solid.

I just saw that last week. I'll probably order the filter to check it out, just wish it wasn't so expensive.

I haven't noticed that much variance once I set a point at the start of a video but I'll have to check again. I know some of the speed and heading data jumps around a bit but it's mostly during taxiing when speeds are slow. I noticed that I got better GPS data when I moved the camera to the windshield instead of a side window.
