VIRB Elite, locks up and will not respond to any of the buttons

Hey guys, I have a new Elite, and sometimes it wi'l lock up, green light on, and will not respond to any of the buttons. It typically happens when I am connecting it to the mac for downloading new recordings. I end up having to remove the battery and start it back up in order to get it to "un-freeze".

Any ideas on what is happening?

thx, Nathan

    Mine also had some lockups.
    - Refusing to stop recording (initiated from VIRB remote) until the slide was moved to record, than back to "off".
    - Refusing to go off while the power sign was displayed.
    - Refusing to go off when USB cable was removed.
    - Some other lockups during use where I had to remove the battery to get it working again.
It also had problems getting in USB mode.
When the battery wasn't completely full, when a cable was connected it would
    - start up go to storidge mode and shutdown
    - start up and use it as an external power source
    - start charging, continue charging when cable was removed!
Tests done with several computers and several cables, formatted the µSD, done a master reset, all the same.
So it's gone back to Garmin.
  • Mine locks up all the time with a 16GB or 64GB card. I made a video showing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvlSQ5oYU-o

I have tried reformatting the card on:
    1. My Mac
    2. My Windows 7 PC
    3. Using my Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS5
    4. Using the VIRB itself

And it just locks up - not all the time, just some of the time, but often enough it's extremely annoying.

anyone having any luck on this? most of my footage from today was lost due to freezing...

my last attempt i made sure wifi was off, stabilization was off too and it seemed to give me 12mins of footage without freezing...

im not trying to record in anything other than 720 60fps because thats the mode i need for mountainbiking footage to look decent.

youre on your second unit from Garmin correct? I was disappointed when it failed repeatedly in 30fps mode last night... i have the underwater case and all these damn mounts so i can chase our two kiddos around as well as film my biking adventures but currently i just have a POS that my gopro friends laugh at...
  • This was posted on the Windows side as well, but I use a Mac most of the time so thought best to post here too:

I went out today, first time to try my new Virb Remote, and it and the camera worked flawlessly. I went through 2.2 batteries, and got back 160 photos and 12 videos ranging in size from 1/2 to 3 Gb in size.

Here's a partial listing of the folder where those files are listed:

Not sure what to say to you people who're having so many problems... except make sure you don't pull the battery out of the camera if your camera locks up. My camera became much more reliable when I started holding the power button in for 20 seconds to restart from a lockup.

Well, either it is reliable or not? For me the Virb is non reliable, it is not working as expected. On the other hand, my iPhone is reliable, it NEVER turns off or just stops responding. It is a reliable device, just as my Mac computers are.
  • Yes, the stills have to be obtained by hand, but the GPS data is written in the EXIF data in the JPG's. Personally, I'm fine with that. VIRB Edit is for videos, not stills.
