Keeps turning off when connected to a Mac running Mavericks

Had my Virb 24 hours and I'm not sure if I have a lemon or not. I'm running Mavericks on an iMac and aside from Virb Edit I have Garmin Express Fit running for my 620 and Ant Agent for my Garmin Swim. There is also an 810 plugged into the iMac (this is relevant, I'm not bragging about my Garmin units else I'd also mention Vector a 310XT and a FR10 :D !!).

After charging the battery in a power socket I was unable to get Virb Edit (via Web Updater) to update the Virb software to v3.0 (I think it was from 2.8). Part way through the install the Virb would power off and all I could get as a response after restarting was an orange exclamation mark. To remedy this I found that a re-format of the memory card would allow me to try again. Each time I also performed a Hard Reset (hold the down arrow whilst power cycling and then select erase data). After 4 or maybe 5 failed attempts of moving to v3.0 with the Virb powering off I then tried updating the software on a windows laptop running Windows 7. It worked first time!!!!!

Moving to version 3.0 did seem to fix an error which affected the time.... even though I had GPS lock and time set to Auto, the time with v2.8 was always an hour fast.... with v3.0 that has been fixed.

HOWEVER - The Virb refuses to stay switched on when plugged into the iMac (via a powered USB hub). After 5-10 minutes a messages pops up saying the Disc was not properly ejected and the Virb is powered off. At the same time the 620 and 810 continue to be mounted drives without issue. I have swapped the Virb cable with the 810 and it makes no difference, I have swapped the USB slots between the Virb and the 810 and it makes no difference..... I have tried this with the Virb Edit software on and off and it makes no difference.... I have tried different memory cards (Ultra Sans 64gb Class 10) - The Virb refuses to stay mounted on the iMac and switched on.

Is this expected behaviour?

PS - The Virb does not power off when plugged into a power socket.

Thoughts?
