Overlays queries

I used my Virb Elite on my road bike to video some of todays ride. I've uploaded it into Virb edit and had a play with it.
On some of the cycling overlays there's a section for 'Pace'. Can anyone tell me what exactly this is displaying.
Also, the heart rate and gradient displays seem to work for a while and then just display --
I know there's HRM data all the way through my ride as I can see it on Strava. Is there anyway of making sure this data is displayed for the whole ride?

It would be great if Garmin could add a feature to customise these overlays. So you could determine what information is displayed and in what colour. I'd like to use some of the overlays, but as I don't have a power meter fitted to my bike, there's no point using them.

Pace is something that runners like. It's just the inverse of speed, in minutes:sec per mile or km. I wish they'd just get rid of it in the cycling overlays, or better yet, as you say, allow us to create our own overlays.

Ok thanks for clarifying. I couldn't work it out looking at the value.
Not much use to cyclists then. Strange they put it on the cycling specific overlays.

Someone over on the forum for the Windows version of VIRB Edit just made an interesting discovery. The templates are kept in individual text files, and it looks as if it should be straightforward to work out the format. The Mac equivalents are, as usual, stored in the application package itself, in /Applications/Garmin VIRB Edit.app/Contents/Resources/Templates (right click "VIRB Edit" and tell it to "Show Package Contents" if you want to go there through the Finder). It should be possible to create custom templates, or at least get rid of annoyances like pace. It's probably best to duplicate VIRB Edit and work on the copy.

Pace is time divided by distance. This can be useful for long races, or for specific training. It is not the same as speed or average speed.

Speed is distance/time, or the inverse of pace. They're the same so far as the information contained is concerned. Pace is useful for runners, because as I understand it, they try to maintain a constant pace as much as possible. Cyclists try to maintain a constant cadence, and use gears to adjust the effort, since, unless you're riding somewhere pan flat with no winds, you can't maintain a constant pace on a bike. Garmin should simply remove pace from all of the cycling templates.

Agree with you. Garmin should remove the pace from cyclist overlays.

I modified one of the existing templates to remove Pace yesterday and saved it as a new template, it wasn't too difficult on a Windows PC.

I use Jens File Editor on my Win7 x64 PC as it can color the commands.
